Overview

Claudia's bathtub has a great big heart. He has longed for the day when children can splash and play in him, so when Claudia picks him out at the bathtub shop, he is overjoyed! From the day he arrives at Claudia's home, she is dreaming up a different bathtime adventure every night, serving tea to the Prince of Wales or rocketing to the moon. But one day Claudia suddenly decides that she is through with baths. She will never take another, thank you very much. And as the days go by and her poor tub stays empty and dry, his big heart grows lonelier and lonelier...ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Ann Rasmussen, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist in private practice, specializing in children and families. She lives in Virginia with her husband, three children, and a very water-loving chocolate Labrador named Cadbury, who when given half a chance doesn't hesitate to join other bathers in the tub.

Marc Nemiroff, Ph.D., serves on the faculty of the Washington School of Psychiatry and the clinical faculty of the George Washington University in Washington D.C. In addition, he maintains a private practice for the treatment of children. His extensive experience with children, both personal and professional, has led him to envision not only lonely bathtubs but also empty school buses, too -- dry toothbrushes, and socks who have lost their feet.

ILLUSTRATOR BIOGRAPHY: Kate Flanagan lives in an old house in New Haven, Connecticut, with her husband, three children, one cat, a number of fire-bellied toads, and two never -- lonely bathtubs. She earned a degree in fine arts from Tufts University, and worked with children's literature as a book reviewer and assistant editor before devoting her career exclusively to illustration. When she is not at her drawing table, she often can be found sewing a patchwork quilt or playing softball or ice hockey.

At first Claudia enjoys her new bathtub, which becomes in turn a fire engine, a floating hospital, and a spaceship, but then she grows tired of being clean and refuses to take a bath, no matter how dirty she gets.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Many young children go through a stage of resisting baths. This whimsical book is a chance to playfully confront this issue with children. The story is told from the view point of the bathtub that enjoys being entertained by a young girl playing in her bath. When she decides not to bathe the bathtub becomes despondent and lonely. The story will appeal to young children, and the illustrations will amuse both parents and children. The author includes some ideas to help parents deal with this issue. 2000, Magination Press, $14.95. Ages 3 to 8. Reviewer: S. Latson SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8
