Overview

A travel guide with character, this fact-filled keepsake offers all the history, beauty, charm, and culture of our nation's capital city. In eye-catching watercolors and detailed sketches, artist Diana Gessler captures the allure that makes Washington DC one of the most visited destinations in the country. In addition to the national landmarks, stirring memorials, and vibrant neighborhoods, there's the Cherry Blossom Festival, the Twilight Tattoo (a military pageant featuring the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and the U.S. Army Drill Team), colorful row houses, famous hotels and restaurants, and more museums than you'll be able to visit in just one trip.

Gessler covers the city's most popular attractions but also heads off the beaten path to share hidden gems, like the quirky Albert Einstein Memorial and Eastern Market, where you can dine on bluebucks and browse for flea market finds. Also included are an index of sites and a useful appendix of addresses, Web sites, Metro stops, and phone numbers.

Very Washington DC is a picture-perfect guidebook—a one-of-a-kind memento for tourists and a cherished reminder of the city's riches for those who have always lived in America's hometown.

Whether you are familiar with or totally unacquainted with Washington DC, this book is a wonderful guide to the city and the near-by areas of Alexandria and Mount Vernon. The descriptive prose is clear, concise, yet thorough, enlightening and engaging. The lovely, prevalent watercolors add much to the enjoyment of the text, as they portray everything from famous people to both well-known and obscure landmarks to the beautiful flora and fauna to the contents of the numerous museums. Obscure but fascinating information, such as the account of Owney, a stray dog that traveled with mailbags on trains all over the country and became the railway mail clerks' mascot make this a most unique travel guide. Owney, preserved, is on view in the National Postal Museum. Gadsby's Tavern Restaurant, founded around 1785 held balls to honor the birthday of George Washington, who actually attended in 1798 and 1799. It is still open and serves both lunch and dinner where you may try peanut soup, which Washington enjoyed on visits there. An appendix provides names, addresses and web sites of more than one hundred places of interest. The index covers topics from Henry Adams to the National Zoo. Even if you cannot personally visit our Capital, this volume is well worth reading to become informed as well as entertained. Purchase is recommended.

*Walks in dressed like a janitor. Carrying a paint can. Security looks at me funny.* 3rd floor I'm late. *Walks towards the elevator and walks in. But what they don't know is there's a gun in the paint can and I'm willin' to bust a fu<_>cking skull.*
