Description: This is a must-have resource for veterinary practitioners who plan on providing healthcare to camelids! Step-by-step directions for each procedure are laid out in an easy-to-read manner, and are combined with detailed photos, practice tips, and recommended reading for those who wish to delve deeper into a subject.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an organized, concise, visually descriptive reference on a variety of camelid procedures, ranging from routine maintenance to advanced procedures for veterinarians and technicians. This is a very worthwhile book due to the fact that camelids are gaining popularity and becoming a larger percentage of a typical mixed-animal practice's client population. This book has the ability to increase the standard of care provided to camelids.
Audience: It is intended primarily for veterinarians and veterinary technicians, specifically those who encounter llamas and/or alpacas in a mixed-animal practice setting. It also is a valuable resource for veterinary students in their final year of their education. All authors are practicing clinicians at accredited veterinary institutions, and are prominent figures in the advancement of camelid medicine.
Features: A wide variety of camelid topics is covered, from basic maintenance techniques to more complex and invasive procedures, among them restraint, catheterization, anesthesia, dental procedures, reproductive procedures, and much, much more. Highlights include the easy-to-read formatting with extensive, full-color visual references, practice tips that stand out from the body of the text, and a companion website. The only shortcoming is the companion website. The list of video clips is not very comprehensive, nor do the clips provide any narration of the procedure taking place. Other than the video clips, there is little material on the website.
Assessment: This is a very valuable addition to the library of mixed-animal practitioners. The range of topics, along with the simplicity of the text and the thoroughness of the visual aids, will enable veterinarians, inexperienced or seasoned, to provide a better standard of care to camelids with more confidence.
