All Music Guide - Matthew Chisling
As the new millennium dawned, Victoria Beckham -- often portrayed as the sexy serious Posh Spice -- remained a member of the hottest girl group of the '90s, the Spice Girls. However, as the world moved into the 2000s, the members of the quartet, Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, and Melanie Brown, were all making solo arrangements and recording solo tracks. Therefore, it was no surprise when Beckham released a debut solo album in 2001. What's interesting to note is that Beckham was often noted as the weakest singer of the girl group; her voice was often considered too wispy for solos when compared to that of Chisholm or Bunton.
Therefore, many people were quite pleasantly surprised at the final product produced by Beckham and her support staff. Beckham certainly doesn't fill her album with power ballads. Rather, she has no problem abusing the voice box and digitally enhancing her voice. The result is an electric -- yet vapid -- set, which sounds like a computer recording. Beckham isn't a true artist on this album, and most of her personality is lost in the shuffle, yet the music is 100 percent enjoyable, with posh ballads (for lack of a better term), sweet uptempo songs, and bubblegum pop tunes that will have any girl or woman singing along in her bedroom. Most of the music blends together; the songs aren't necessarily individual hits (with a few exceptions, such as "Not Such an Innocent Girl" and "I.O.U."). In addition, many of the lyrics, when given a spoonful of attention, are laughable ("I'm not made of china, I'm not made of glass," Beckham coos to her man, suggesting she needn't be handled delicately.) Yet Beckham's often sexy lower voice keeps the album coy and mature, and not in a creepy way (perhaps mindful of the young girls who idolized her from her days as a Spice Girl). In fact, the majority of the songs are of the same caliber as the lesser-known Spice Girls tracks. If one feels that Beckham isn't trying to be a genuine artist, and that she is merely attempting to do her best as a singer, then this collection of over-produced yet strong songs is a pleasantly enjoyable set. However, as a full-fledged artist Beckham has failed, since her own songwriting is lacking and her voice is secondary to the music, which drowns her out in parts. It's all about perspective.

    Sophisticated Spice...

Victoria has definately proven that she can sing. Although I'd recommend this album to only lovers of romantic pop ballads. In my opinion the titan tracks of this LP has to be: "That Kind of Girl", "Every Part Of Me", "I Wish", "A Mind Of It's Own" and "Midnight Fantasy".. She didn't do too-bad in the up-tempo tracks either... "Not Such An Innocent Girl" has to be my favorite upbeat track on this album...ENJOY!

    Not Such an Innocent Album

This album is too traditionel album. Every one has done same kind of music. It is very easy to do. There is some track like "A Mind of Its Own" and "Like That" that may be good radio tracks. Almost every track is like other but this album is relaxing to hear so why three stars.

    Awesome R&B album

Let's get this straight. I'm still afraid of coming across as a Victoria Beckham fan because of the Spice Girl association, but y'know what? After listening to this album, I don't care anymore. The girl can really pull her stuff together! It's so good that a 21 year old, former Anti-Spice like myself ain't afraid to let the world know I'm giving Victoria's album a sincere thumbs up. I'm of the school of thought that exhalts Sarah McLachlan and Jewel, so the fact that an R&B album could claim a spot in my CD player is the second shocker to me. First I've become a Victoria Beckham fan, and now I'm listening to R&B... but you know, this album is really that good for its genre. What impressed me the most about this recording was that Victoria wrote/co-wrote all the songs. The songs are solid, all very strong tracks. Some are better than others, but each track is very well woven together. The momentum carries all throughout each song flawlessly. Her lyrics are fantastic, as well, matching well with the rhythmn of each song. Other woman who have great talent for lyricism are Poe and Shania Twain- not so much for coming up with glorious poetry, but for coming up with lyrics that just seem like they were meant to be part of the song naturally. Victoria Beckham, in my opinion, is to R&B what Poe is to alternative rock/pop, and what Shania is to country. If you're afraid of hearing Posh spice sing because you're not sure if she can... rest assured. She's no soprano, but she can sing. She's got a rather perfect voice for R&B/pop. Each track is tight. Strong rhythmn, well done vocal arrangements, good lyrics that flow- can't find a flaw. Out of all the Spice Girl solo efforts, all I can say is Victoria seems to have the strongest feel and talent for creating R&B music, and I came to that conclusion from listening to this album. Very solid recording. Makes me look forward to her next release. Think JLo's good? Take a listen to 'Like That' and 'I Wish.' Think the Britney ballads were good? Give 'Unconditional Love' and 'I.O.U.' a go. I think the reason I liked this recording so much was it was a personal recording, and it shows. She's not another R&B artist waiting on a hit- she's writing from her life experiences. She's got songs written for her husband, for her son, and for former friends (Ginger ring a bell?). Basically, this recording isn't vapid- it's the furthest thing from it.

    She just rocks!

Victoria Beckham has done a great job on this album, really showed her personality in this album, she was very open minded. I have to say that all the tracks were worth more then it's prize. I like the song every part of me because it's just the sweetest thing a mother could write for her child. Luv yah, Victoria!

    Impressed!

I always liked Victora the best and thought she never got to sing much on the Spice Girls album, she has a pop quality voice and the songs are good. I'm very happy for her and hope the album does well.

    The True Reflection

What ever the views of Victoria Beckham are people need to look past them and get a less buyest view. Not Such An Innocent Girl, umm not really a good song, ok for young kids, but thats about it. Mind Of Its Own, yes, getting better. But really, neither are a reflection of her album. When I listened to it I was abit dissapointed but I gave it some time and it grew on me. Actually for a while I was obsessed (not anymore). The album is the best pop album I have ever heard. It reflects future pop/R&B with new sounds and mixin styles to get your head round. I Wish is an excellent song and that is a good reflection of the quality of music on the album. I really would recommend this.

    Just Love It

I have to admit that I wasn't too sure what Victoria's album would be like but I just had to buy this after hearing A Mind Of It's Own. A bit silly to buy an album on the strength of one song, but after listening to the album it is not a decision that I regret one bit. My absolute favourite songs are A Mind Of It's Own, I Wish, Midnight Fantasy, I.O.U and Like That. I enjoy listening to the whole album, although I feel that Not Such An Innoncent Girl doesn't do justice to Victoria's voice. May be Not Such An Innocent Girl is just a bit too much of a pop song for me, but I just couldn't get into it. The rest of the songs, however, are well worth listening to. Despite all the personal comments made about Victoria, she does actually have a good voice, and hardly the first person to have mimed a song at a concert or used a vocorder to enhance her voice. Victoria's voice may not be the stongest in the world, but it is certainly alot better than Geri Halliwell's. The album contains a great mix pop and R&B songs that seem to blend well together and also suit Victoria's voice. An enjoyable mix of songs well worth listening to, and an album well worth buying.
