    A Pleasant Surprise

I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did, but I was pleasantly surprised. The stories were compelling, humorous, and inspirational. The female characters were portrayed as strong, independent women of faith. Reading about Christmases during times long ago made the stories even more interesting. I liked this book very much, and I recommend it to anyone who likes holiday stories, light romance, with a Christian message.

    A Victorian Christmas--4 short stories

Although it is highly unusual for me to purchase a book that has more that one story in it this one was very enjoyable.
Story #1: fun to read and ended wonderfully!
Story #2: although it is doubtful that anyone would go to marry a man before they have met it is interesting how this one begins and ends.
Story #3: Quite interesting when it comes to not being able get into his own home when he forgets to bring his key and how it plays out.
Story #4: a love story indeed.

    Surprised-- I loved it!

I hardly ever read short stories, romances, or Christian fiction, so it was really unusual for me to read something that was all of those at once. I surprised myself by loving this anthology. You have to be really willing to suspend your disbelief (which is why romances usually aren't my cup of tea), but if you can, these four stories are surprisingly well-developed for short stories. The Christian message wasn't nauseating in the vein of most Christian fiction, either (I am a Christian; I just can't can't stand the saccharine, badly-written stuff that passes for most "inspirational fiction").

The stories, though brief, managed to capture the pain of making difficult decisions and of living out what you say you believe. And they brought a wonderful message of hope, too. Just what I needed this Christmas. :)

This collection of novellas is a fun Christmas read! All the stories pertain to sweet romances throughout the Victorian era. Messages of Jesus Christ shine through the pages. Here are a few notes on the individual stories....

"Angel in the Attic": A rich young woman meets a man alleged to be murderous. I enjoyed Fara's fiery attitude and the way she talks in her western accent. She's a very down-to-earth character, ready to say anything on her mind. A wonderful story to start out this book!

"Lone Star": This is the story of a woman entering an arranged marriage that will seal business deals for her father's ranch in Texas. After a voyage to England to meet her future husband, things go awry, providing many laughs for the reader!

"Under His Wings": An English earl comes home one wintry night from a long trip. He is greeted by one of the housemaids in his mansion, who offers him just enough warmth, chaos, wittiness that the love that unfolds is quite unusual in society, yet perfectly understandable under the circumstances.

"Behold the Lamb": This story is charming and lovely. It centers around a baronet who has selected his wife based on certain criteria about her family. However, she doesn't quite turn out to be the lady he thought that he was looking for! (I believe this story turned out to be my personal favorite.)

    Lovely...

I truly enjoyed these Christmas stories. They are well written and the characters are very likeable and realistic. There is a light Christian theme set in victorian times and recipes are included for each story. A very nice read for anyone.

    Not bad, but....

I like Christian romance; in fact I have a shelf in my Nook labeled "Romance - Christian". But this one shoves the Chrisitianity down my throat a little more than I like. Not as much as the old Grace Livingston Hill books did, but still a bit more than I like. I much prefer the Love Inspired series.

    Elegant and Fun Christmas stories!

There are four short stories in this book. My Favorite Christmas story was the second in the book. An All American girl who grew up on a ranch is engaged to a British man with a title. But first she meets his brother on the carriage ride there. Great characters!
