Hard Cover. Brand New/NEW Book Jacket. Many of the designs in this 144 page volume are beautiful works of art in themselves, and include delicate watercolors executed in ... exquisite detail. The relationship of design to finished object is explored through both a lively text and many handsome photographs of a wide range of important pieces from the Victoria & Albert's museum collections! A rich variety of styles is revealed in the pages such as revivals of Gothic & Rococo, a new fasciantion with the East in Japonisme, and the appearance of Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement. Elaborate designs for furniture, ceramics and silver are seen alongside actual pieces as they were eventually created. A range of room designs reflect changing tastes in form and color, together with different lifestyles. All the designs combine to build a picture of Victorian taste and style which will be an indispensable resource for anyone with interest in this period! Read more Show Less

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Newton, curator of the Victoria and Albert Museum's Department of Prints, Drawings, and Paintings, has assembled a collection of designs from the museum that show the breadth of Victorian design, from the Gothic and Rococo revivals to the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements. These designs comprise watercolors showing interiors, sketches for furniture and architectural detail, and patterns used for textiles and wallpaper, some with the finished object itself. Since many of these works have never been published before, this book provides a unique view of the design history of Victorian England that will be useful for design schools and professional collections.
