Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Allison Fetters
Without question, Kayla knows she is one of the best gymnasts on her team. As a result, she begins to slack off at practice because she begins to feel as if she no longer needs the work-out. During the Regional Gymnastics Competition, Kayla knows from the moment her feet hit the springboard that things are not right. She executes a faulty landing and is then surprised when the judges award her the trophy for the highest score anyway. The judges had been distracted when someone was injured and failed to see Kayla's misstep when she landed. Chandra, Kayla's best friend, sees it all and knows that Kayla should not have accepted the trophy. Kayla must make a decision if she wishes to save her friendship with Chandra. In the end, Kayla does what is right. In addition to an interesting story, the book provides several resources, such as, a glossary, discussion topics, writing prompts, and a brief section on women's gymnastics. "Jake Maddox Sports Stories" series. Reviewer: Allison Fetters
