From The CriticsReviewer: James J Mezhir, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This instructional video atlas for hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery beautifully combines a textbook and video presentation.
Purpose: It is intended as a resource on the anatomy, basic techniques, and major procedures in liver, biliary, and pancreatic surgery. As such, it covers the majority of procedures in the field, save for transplant and portal hypertension procedures. This is an important contribution because of the paucity of instructional books in this field and because it is written and produced by one of the fathers of hepatobiliary surgery, Dr. Leslie Blumgart.
Audience: The audience is broad — from medical students to residents to fellows to junior faculty surgeons to experienced hepatobiliary surgeons — all levels with an interest in hepatobiliary surgery. The author is one of the authorities!
Features: The book covers a wide range of hepatobiliary surgery, from basic hepatic anatomy and techniques to advanced surgical procedures. It details all types of liver and pancreatic resections in an instructional format for those interested in learning or performing pancreaticobiliary surgery. The meticulous nature of the videos is the highlight. The procedures are performed by Dr. Blumgart with careful narration and high-yield advice for those preparing to perform these operations. It is enjoyable to watch this master at work. The clear and informative text is an excellent complement to the videos. There is extensive color art and all videos are of excellent quality.
Assessment: This is a must-have for anyone who practices hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery. I use it to teach residents and medical students and it helps prepare them for our operations together. There is no comparable video atlas.
