Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"This surgical atlas combines the traditional illustrated textbook with a narrated video accompanying each chapter. These are presented on DVD and can also be accessed online...Each chapter provides a concise and generallly well-illustrated description of the operation covered...Overall this atlas is an up to date and pertinent addition to the surgical literature, but a number of the videos could have been better.

The British Journal of Surgery, December 2012

"This is a well-thought-out and nicely written atlas on minimally invasive surgery. Each chapter is straightforward and is complemented by a generous amount of well-done illustrations. In addition to that, the bulk of each chapter is organized according to the operation's key steps, making it very easy on readers. One of the highlights of this book is the fact that the contents are also accessible online. For additional illustrative purposes, the package includes DVDs and online access to videos showing how the procedures are done. The majority of the procedures are edited to be less than 15 minutes in length, and contain high definition images with good quality narration. In short, this multimedia surgical atlas is strongly recommended for those interested in complex and new technological advances in the field of minimally invasive surgery."- Hui Sen Chong, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics) 4 star Doody rating!

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Hui Sen Chong, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: In 2009, the authors published Atlas of Minimally Invasive Surgery (Elsevier, 2009), which covers commonly performed general laparoscopic procedures. They take it a step further with this collaborative multimedia publication that focuses on various advanced minimally invasive surgeries according to organ systems and surgical specialty, including surgical oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, urology, and pediatric surgery to name a few. It serves as an advanced addition to the previous book, with a limited number of overlapping chapters.
Purpose: This is intended as a guide to complex laparoscopic procedures across various surgical disciplines. In addition to routine complex laparoscopic procedures, this book also covers new advances in the field of minimally invasive surgery, including natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery and robotic surgery.
Audience: It is suitable for residents, fellows, and surgeons who perform laparoscopic procedures.
Features: Chapters are organized according to organ system, and each one starts off with an introductory paragraph, followed by two concise sections containing operative indications and preoperative workup. The majority of the chapters are dedicated to procedures, walking readers in a step-by-step fashion through the operation itself, and ending with a summary and a section addressing complications and outcomes. Chapters contain excellent color illustrations and when appropriate, incorporate the actual operative anatomy. There is a good mixture of routine complex laparoscopic procedures and procedures that are performed less frequently, e.g. laparoscopic pancreatic pseudocyst drainage, laparoscopic transgastric esophageal mucosal resection, etc. These chapters serve as one of the highlights of this book, as they are oftentimes difficult to find in similar books. Lastly, the high-quality videos for each operation help with comprehension and definitely add to the value.
Assessment: "This is a well-thought-out and nicely written atlas on minimally invasive surgery. In short, this multimedia surgical atlas is strongly recommended for those interested in complex and new technological advances in the field of minimally invasive surgery. "
