Overview

A collection of five works of music written to accompany multi-channel video presentations. 36 Strings (1992) is for the Korean komungo, played here with much expression and feeling by Jin Hi Kim, and five channels of video. It is dedicated to the reconciliation of North and South Korean families. "8 Mallets Four Brian" (1986) is for marimba, vibraphone, xylophone and orchestra bells and three channels of video. It is an evocative work with dense, sustained textures. "Andes" (1990) was realized by seven Peruvian musicians, and is set amongst a "Mountain of Televisions." It is played here by the Grupo de Musica Folklorica del Peru on cajon, mama cuena, cuena, zampoona, cahita, and charango, and was recorded at Peruvian National Television in Lima with submachine-gunned guards standing around while the musicians obliged with simultaneous rhythms of African 4/4 and Spanish 3/4. "Video Sax" (1993) is for various saxes and five channels of video. It begins with slow, dissonantly meshing scale patterns, and then begins to accelerate and get stuck in repeating rhythmic nodes; the slow process is started again and winds its way to a free-for-all wailing jam for a coda. "Violin & Video" (1988), for multi-tracked solo violin and three channels of video, is a triple counterpoint of stereo pulsing chops, a descending sustained tone track and a wild central improvised solo track. This entire CD is a richly rewarding listening experience.
