Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
This is not a book about Pac-Man or other games from the 1980s. For those of us of a certain age, "video games" means television-based games or the hand-held devices that every kid seems to have glued to their hands. While this book touches on these kinds of games in a sort of historical walk through the development process, the focus here is on the huge online video gaming industry. And huge it is. For example, did you know that Xbox Live has some 8 million users worldwide or that the adult game Grand Theft Auto IV made more than 300 million dollars in the first 24 hours after its release? These are just some of the interesting facts unearthed in this nonfiction text. Using lots of photographs coupled with some mid-level writing, this book guides readers through the online gaming culture, its status as a sport, its tie-in to movies and the controversy surrounding many of the games' penchant for violence. There is also a chapter about what goes on behind the scenes, detailing the making and marketing of this wildly popular pastime. An excellent resource for readers interested in this hobby, the book includes a glossary, index and guide to further online information. For those using this system, the publishers rate the text at guided reading level M. Reviewer: Kris Sauer
