Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
In mid-May 1968, American troops stormed positions held by North Vietnamese regulars on a hilltop in the A Shau Valley in the northern portion of South Vietnam. What followed was a ten-day battle for control of this hilltop. Early on in the battle, the scale of violence and bloodshed led American soldiers to call this mountain top Hamburger Hill. This bloody battle in the Vietnam War is the subject of this volume in the illustrated "24/7 Goes to War" series. As in other books of this fine series, this volume approaches an historical event through the perspectives of a handful of participants. In this case, three American soldiers who fought at Hamburger Hill tell their story to provide readers with insights about the battle at large. This "you are there" approach to history works well and results in a concise and valuable look at a pivotal battle. Through the words and experiences of American soldiers, readers will come away with a better understanding not only of this particular battle but also the entire Vietnam War and its costs.
