Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula McMillen
This volume on Vikings provides more textual information than other entries in the "History's Greatest Warriors" series, discussing geography, chronology, social status, culture (e.g., literature, art, religion), and the economic impetus for invasions. Ship design and military tactics are described as are famous warriors. The Viking era began in the 700's and spread as far west as North America and east to present day Ukraine and Turkey. The Vikings settled in the places they invaded, married and became defenders of the land, with the end of the era generally acknowledged to be William the Conqueror's invasion of England in 1066. The series identifies university history faculty as consultants for individual volumes but otherwise cites no sources for factual information and no note is provided about individual authors. Unfamiliar words are highlighted in the text, defined at the bottom of the page where originally found, and accumulated into a glossary at the end of the text. Limited sources for further reading are offered as well as a link to the "FactHound" website which accompanies most Capstone publications. A short index provides access to content, which is spread across glossy full-color pages of photographs, charts, and color-blocks of topical information. This volume would be useful supplemental material on the subject for school libraries. Reviewer: Paula McMillen, Ph.D.
