Villa-Lobos: Bachianas brasileiras (Excerpts); Sentimental Melody; Chôros Nos. 1 & 5

All Music Guide - Mike D. Brownell
Bachianas brasileiras was among the many untranslatable forms Heitor Villa-Lobos created. In essence, they fuse the techniques and textures of J.S. Bach with music from Villa-Lobos' native Brazil. Nine such suites in total incorporate a vast diversity of instrumental and vocal combinations. This album features excerpts from five of these suites, as well as moments from some of his other more popular creations. While a survey of this type gives listeners a quick overview of the composer's output, it is put together rather choppily. Including only individual movements of some of the Bachianas brasileiras leaves a decidedly incomplete picture. This in and of itself might be acceptable if it were not for the use of several different ensembles, each producing highly variable results. The album opens with two movements of perhaps the most famous of the suites, "Bachianas No. 5." Soprano Victoria de Los Angeles is nothing short of stunning; by contrast, the orchestra of eight cellos, taken from the French Radio National Orchestra that accompanies her, is quite thin-sounding and unappealing. Later in the album, the cellos of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra perform the first movement of "Bachianas No. 1" to far greater effect and with vastly superior sound quality. While the bargain price of this album may be appealing, listeners are likely to find its contents sporadic and too inconsistently performed.
