Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
From the world's tiniest valentine to a giant heart made of thread, a community of animals celebrates Valentine's Day in a wide variety of ways. PW called this series of vignettes "an effervescent medley, certain to add sparkle to a wintry February eve." Ages 5-up. Jan.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2The animal inhabitants of a small town wrestle with preparations for the 14th of February; make, give, and receive valentines; and put on a little show. The book's seven brief vignettes humorously highlight the feelings and struggles children often experience. The simple text, arranged in an elementary chapter-book format, is easy to manage, and the pen-and-watercolor cartoons are balanced nicely throughout. This pleasant holiday offering done in typical Stevenson style will appeal to beginning readers.Virginia E. Jeschelnig, Willoughby-Eastlake Public Library, Willowick, OH

ger for reading aloud. Part of what makes Stevenson's books so charming and humorous are the oh-so-human, oh-so-recognizable traits of his animal characters. Even though this chapter/picture book, on a Valentine's Day theme, isn't one of his best, children will easily recognize and be delighted by character types they know in the "real" world: the grump, the perfectionist, the sweet-natured, and the generous. Each of the first five of the seven short chapters tells a complete story about the different ways animals in a little village celebrate Valentine's Day. The last two chapters, which are linked, bring all the characters together for a charming finale that catches the spirit of the holiday. As usual, Stevenson has marshaled a sprightly, colorful cast and has fetchingly rendered them in watercolor detailed with ink lines.

Clifford's Rule

"Sending any valentines this year, Clifford?" asked Maureen.

"Certainly not!" said Clifford.

"Why not?" said Maureen.

"I have a strict rule," said Clifford.

"I never send a valentine to anybody unless they send me one first."

"You might have to wait a while," said Maureen.

"I already have," said Clifford.

"How long?" said Maureen.

"Fifty-six years," said Clifford.
