Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Known for its particular approach to journalism, the Village Voice is considered an expert source on New York City's culture, art, film, and theater worlds. Its highly regarded writers are known to influence the success or failure of a production. Lim, the paper's film critic and editor, along with other staff writers, has compiled a film guide from reviews written primarily by top critics J. Hoberman, Jonas Mekas, and Andrew Sarris. Movies reviewed include Blue Velvet, M, Citizen Kane, and King of Comedy. The review of John Waters's cult classic Pink Flamingos, in which Jack Smith rants about other reviewers without offering much information about the film or the talented cast of characters, is disappointing. Most of the other reviews do not have the avant-garde irreverence one would expect from the Voice. With the Roger Ebert and Halliwell guides around, not to mention the numerous other guides that have reviewed most of the same films, this is not an essential purchase. Fans of film guides may enjoy the variety of works covered.
