Library Journal
Although much attention has been given to his paintings, van Gogh's drawings are less widely known. This catalog of a recent exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum (VGM) in Amsterdam and the upcoming exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA) in New York (Oct. 18-Dec. 31) is the first study of van Gogh's drawings in a number of years. Edited by curators Ives and Susan Alyson Stein of MMA and Sjraar van Heugten and Marije Vellekoop of VGM, the catalog uses illustrations and scholarly essays to show that Van Gogh's drawings are closely intertwined with his paintings in style, composition, and technique. While he created over 800 paintings, his 1100 drawings were made to produce a similar tactile effect, achieved by using materials that convey spontaneity and speed, such as pencil, reed pen, charcoal, watercolor, and chalk. The final essay is devoted to the condition of van Gogh's drawings and how, more often than not, their colors have faded. Also included are scientific analyses utilizing x-rays of van Gogh's drawings from his Provence period. A thorough and scholarly study with beautiful reproductions, this book is recommended for libraries collecting in art history.-Sandra Rothenberg, Framingham State Coll., MA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
