Nice photos for inspiration, not a how-to book

I was somewhat disappointed in that I hoped this book would provide a more nostalgic look at knitting and more practical advice. Instead, there are a lot of pretty pictures, but if you try to knit these, you will need to buy the exact kind of yarn mentioned, which may be too expensive or not even available when you get around to doing the project. I find that more practical, how-to books like Elizabeth Zimmerman's _Knitting Without Tears_ or Maggie Righetti's _Sweater Design in Plain English_ are more helpful, because then you can take any yarn you like and make a sweater, using techniques that are enjoyable and proven over time. Also, IMHO knitting a sweater flat and sewing the pieces together is no fun at all. Knitting in the round is far better, and you will find advice on that from authors like Zimmerman and Righetti. I doubt if I will ever make any of the patterns in this book, even though I am a fairly experienced knitter.

    Warning about directions

While these patterns are among the most beautiful I have seen, there is a major problem with the directions. Any sweater with a color key to a multi-colored pattern is not coded with the symbols to match the pattern grid. Without the coding, you will not know what color to change to on at least five of these patterns. Yet another pattern asks you change to moss stitch, but never describes the stitch in the pattern or book. These are the problems I found on a first reading, there may be others less obvious. Again, the designs are among the best out there, but be careful if you decide to knit one. The key problem was identified by a reviewer on the publisher's website on September 4, 2002, however it appears no one has responded. I searched the Internet for more info on the book in regards to the patterns, but no luck there yet. I really do not want to return the book, I just want to knit without worrying about errors other than my own.
