Overview

The home arts are back. Americans may be buying less these days, but they're investing more than ever in life at home. Cooking, sewing, knitting and fashion-design, as well as crafting, gardening, recycling/refashioning and home improvement, are exploding as evidenced by Lifetime TV's "Project Runway," the D.I.Y. network and the fast-growing Etsy website.

At the forefront of this trend is domestic arts industry leader Amy Barickman. Amy wrote Vintage Notions to inspire readers to parlay their hobbies into a lifestyle that promises personal reward, stronger family ties, financial potential and the sense of fulfillment that comes from making something special with your own two hands. Vintage Notions is a book filled with creative ideas, practical advice and charming anecdotes that celebrate the domestic arts. Whether it's cooking, sewing, gardening or recycling, home arts enthusiasts will appreciate this book's inventive ideas, which show the value of vintage materials and attitudes as they relate to life in today's world.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Craft publisher and vintage aficionado Barickman (Hankie Style: Fashions Featuring Vintage & Reproduction Hankies) celebrates the legacy of domestic arts pioneer Mary Brooks Picken in this collection of anecdotes, projects, and essays. Many of the included pieces originally appeared in publications from Picken's Women's Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences in the 1920s–30s, and while some are a bit quaint, there's a good deal of valuable (and timeless) information. Readers with a taste for vintage design and old-fashioned, down-home inspiration will appreciate Barickman's homage to this forgotten icon.
