Overview

" Florals, vintage fabrics, and soft pastel colors have taken the fashion world by storm. After years of neutral, minimalist interiors, the colors, textures, and comfort of yesteryear have returned. In Vintage Style, designer Cath Kidston provides a guide to creating and updating this refreshing look throughout your home. The essence of this eclectic style is the combination of beautiful old fabrics and textures with modern comforts. For each room in the home, from the living room and kitchen to the bathroom and outdoors, Cath Kidston shows how the elements work, from big-picture ideas for walls, floors, and woodwork to details such as lined storage baskets for the kitchen and fabric-edged antique blankets for the bedroom. Her inspiration is drawn from a broad palette: the faded beauty of old French wallpapers, the bright patterns of the fifties, and many other contemporary sources. With irresistible photography by Pia Tryde, Vintage Style transforms the charms of the past into a fresh, contemporary approach to decorating for today. "

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This London shop owner, whose designs have been featured in Better Homes & Gardens magazine, describes her own design style as a blend of Rachel Ashwell's faded, worn, and comfortable look Shabby Chic, LJ 9/15/99 and Mary Engelbreit's bright nostalgia-inspired look Crafts To Decorate Your Home, LJ 5/15/99. With photographs of her own home as well as those she has designed for others, Kidston describes how she came to develop her style, using flea-market and thrift-store finds and taking inspiration to create color schemes from favorite pictures, vintage fabric, etc. Purchase where there is a continued interest in this style. Imaginative, Fun Ideas Abound in Creative, Lovely, How-To Decorating Book

Cath Kidston has wonderful ideas for every room of the home that will find their place among nearly any decorating scheme. Rich, colorful photographs vividly depict her creativity as the projects come to life within its pages. Easy-to-follow text reads almost like a journal and takes the reader on a tour of Cath's home. At the same time, the reader is inspired to try these ideas in his or her own home. Cath Kidston's writing is pleasant and warm and the reader will feel at home right away. Pia Tryde's appealing photography is wonderful. Every room of the home has a chapter devoted to its importance and how it can work harder and look more appealing. The kitchen, laundry, living room, bedroom, and bath all beckon the reader with colorful ideas. Children's rooms are also included as well as the ever-important, becoming-more-prominent home office. Beautiful and sometimes eclectic fabrics are taken into today's home with fresh appeal and clever uses. Old furniture, gathered from several generic suggested sources, gets new life in bright, fun colors and, again, in wonderful new ways. Storage ideas abound and interesting ways to display collections and items already found in the home are a wonderful treat. The book is beautifully assembled and is too lovely and appealing to display on the coffee table for very long. Its attractive cover and pretty pages will always inspire and invite the reader to travel through the author's home again and again. The ideas shown, and described in detail, get the reader's creativity sparked so much so that the next step is to begin personalizing these ideas into the home with such items on hand and then to search for similar finds that can be incorporated into one's own home.
