Overview

For over fifteen years, M. Christine Byron and Thomas R. Wilson have been collecting old postcards and Michigan travel materials that depict Leelanau County. Much of this memorabilia -- covering the 1890s to the 1960s -- makes up the heart and soul of Vintage Views of Leelanau County. What you'll learn is that the more Leelanau County has changed, the more it has stayed the same. And what people loved about Leelanau County in those days is what people love about it these days.

And -- hopefully -- what people will love about it in the future, too.

A pure delight from start to finish

In their new book, 'Vintage Views of Leelanau County,' M.Christine Byron and Thomas R. Wilson have woven a charming portrait of the history of Leelanau County, one Michigan¿s preeminent vacation destinations. Based largely on their extensive collection of old postcards and tourism memorabilia, the authors focus on the period ranging from the 1890s to the 1960s, with special emphasis on the county¿s vacation and tourism aspects. Beginning with an overview of the history of Leelanau County, they follow with a description of the modes of transportation that brought vacationers to and from this rustic haven situated in the north west of Michigan¿s Lower Peninsula. This is followed by a section each devoted to Empire, Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, Glen Haven, Glen Lake Region, Glen Arbor, Lake Leelanau Region, Leland, Northport & Northport Point, Omena, Sutton¿s Bay and North & South Manitou Islands. The text is profusely illustrated with vintage real-photo postcards, facsimiles of maps, and advertising from hotels and restaurants. Informative and entertaining captions accompany most, and vary in length from a single line to a page. Many of the postcard images include the message written on the back by the vacationer, and range from the sentiments of the enchanted traveler (¿Glen Haven proves that Mich. is also on the map for beauty spots. It is wonderful here,¿ as written by Ted in 1920) to those of the less-so, as expressed by Randy in 1925, writing from Glen Arbor (¿Having a rotten time. Flat tires and engine trouble.¿) Other captions quote text from contemporary local newspapers, travel brochures, pamphlets and books, and all work together to provide a fascinating account of the Leelanau County of yesteryear. A pure delight from start to finish, 'Vintage Views of Leelanau County' is sure to be of interest to those who are familiar with the area, as well as to those who have yet to visit.

    A Delightful Journey

Millions of vacationers have enjoyed the beauty of Leenanau County over the years. Now, through this book, everyone can share in the enchantment of this Northern Michigan vacation land in the comfort of their own living room or front porch. Authors Tom Wilson and Christine Byron have skillfully put together a book that is not only fun to read, but is a wonderful historical study of the vacation and travel industry in Northern Michigan. Using postcards and pieces of early travel material, along with the actual words from vacationers themselves taken from old postcards, they've given readers a wonderful taste of vacation life over the years.Vintage Views of Leenanau County is a wonderful addition to anyone's coffee-table book collection.

    This book is wonderful!

The first thing you'll notice about this title is that it is beautiful to look at-- the design of the book, inside and out is very well thought out. I felt as if I'd settled down with a family photo album that had been sitting around the cottage for years. The authors deliver on the text with an always interesting mix of historical research and period newspaper articles. Oh, and they provided the text from the back of numerous postcards; that may be my favorite, those little glimpses into people's lives from the postcards they sent. I'd say this book is ideal for anyone who, certainly, has vacationed in Leelanau, but also for anyone along west Michigan.

    Wonderful journey!

The authors have drawn on their own collections of 1,400+ postcards, maps, travel booklets and brochures and added other extensive research to develop a wonderful view of the history of Leelanau County, Michigan, aka 'The Land of Delight!' Covering the 1890's to the 1960's, this beautifully designed, entertaining book is a wonderful example of using a variety of primary sources--old picture postcards with their personal messages, old photographs, advertisements, maps, travel brochures, newspaper articles, etc.--to bring to life a time and place many hold dear. There is much here to make you smile and want to visit again and again!

An entertaining and informative look at the past

Brimming with postcard images from the past, this beautifully designed book takes the reader on a voyage through another time. Nostalgic imagery is well complemented by historical details and travelers' experiences of the era.
