Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3–5—Latimer takes readers behind the scenes during a game day of four popular sports. Many workers contribute to a successful day of competition, and the photographs elaborate upon the narratives to explain the wide variety of people, such as groundskeepers, equipment managers, and journalists who, along with players, create a sporting event. However, some photographs are more interesting than others. It is strange that for such an active game as hockey, 3 out of the 18 pictures are of players relaxing. Latimer's narration gives insight into players' strange habits or wild superstitions before games. In addition, Basketball shows the personal side of athletes who work for charity off the field. Some vocabulary words, such as "trainer," are defined as they are used, and are repeated among the books. Select individual sports titles as necessary.
Children's Literature - Jody Little
There is much work that goes into the smooth running of a National Hockey League game. Players, coaches, officials, trainers, equipment managers, journalists and others do their part to bring an action-packed game to excited hockey fans. Hockey is a dangerous and often violent sport that requires athletes to be well-rested and in top condition for game day. Trainers, doctors and dentists are available during the game to tend to injuries caused by hockey sticks, pucks, skate blades or even fights. Fans of hockey will enjoy this book which is part of the series, "From the Locker Room to the Press Box." Captioned, colored photos of players and game action as well as succinct sidebars that include interesting hockey trivia and historical information will keep readers entertained. The author highlights and defines important hockey vocabulary throughout the book. To assist with school reports or projects, a table of contents, glossary, additional reading sources, Internet sites and index are also included. Reviewer: Jody Little
