Out of all the seven books I've read so far in the series, this one is the most suspenseful. The latest lead takes 14 year-old Amy Cahill and her 11 year-old brother Dan Cahill to South Africa in search of the next clue in the hunt for the 39 clues that unlock the secret to a great power.
Although South Africa does not come alive to me as some of the other destinations did, the author focuses on its history of fighting apartheid and gaining civil rights. We meet some of the late Grace's good friends and learn more about her through them. Shaka Zulu and Sir Winston Churchill are the historical figures that play a role in the discovery of the latest clue.
Some of the characters that appear in this book are Isabel Kabra and her kids, still vicious enemies who pursue Amy and Dan. The Holts make a brief appearance and Hamilton helps them out again in secret. Makes me wonder what will become of this relationship between Hamilton and the Cahill kids. Alistair Oh makes his usual "help the kids, then disappear" act. And Nellie Gomez, their au pair is with them throughout their mission to find the next clue. Amy and Dan finally confront Nellie about their suspicions of her and she reassures them with explanations that re-establish the trust they had from the beginning of their journey. It seems clear to me that she cares about them, but I am still trying to figure out who she really is!
Toward the end of the book, an incident occurs and Dan is fighting for his life. And. Amy and Dan finally learn the truth about their family branch. In retrospect, I should have known all along. This book makes me very eager to begin Book 8. We are getting closer to the end and we feel it.

My son, who has not been very interested in reading, is now reading for pleasure! He really got into these books and has read every one in the series. We rush to B & N everytime there is a new release in the series. These books can also be used for A/R testing purposes. Its nice to find a series of books that kids like that can also be educational and creative! I recommend these to parents looking to spark an interest in reading!

This book- along with the previous 39 Clues novels are short reads but always leave me on the edge of my seat wanting more! I know these books are geared more towards middle and highschool students- but Im a junior in college & its books like these that allow me to get away for awhile after a long hectic day of studying and working! The president of my college gave us a study tip one day & said to study hard for 30 min & do something that's stupid (or just distracts your brain) for 30 min! So I read fiction books that take me away and captivate my focus! I generally can read these books in about a day- I just can't put them down! Its a great story line & because each book has a different author you don't know where the story is going to go! But honestly I didn't know that there were different authors at first- my friend had to point it out- that just shows how well they all know each character & the other authors!

My daughter loves this series and this seventh book is no exception! She finds them engrossing but says you need to buy them so that you also get the cards in order to play the online games. Getting a library book is not as good since they don't come with the cards.
