Overview

The modern world had never seen such horror (poisonous gas, trench warfare, improved technology and new weapons, and pandemic disease). Some 40 million people were casualties during the War, with approximately 19 million killed. The United States suffered 53,402 killed or missing in action and many more to disease and influenza for a total of 116,708 deaths. As for VMI, "Fifty-seven alumni were killed in action or died in the line of duty and there were 138 other casualties, including four prisoners of war." These are some of those stories.

About the Author

Tom O'Sullivan is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute in the class of 1982. He is a retired Lt. Colonel, U.S. Army. When he was a Cadet at V.M.I. from 1978 until May 1982, he was a history major with a great interest in the World Wars. A book in the VMI Preston Library cumbersomely titled “Record of Service in the World War of V.M.I. Alumni and Their Alma Mater” fascinated me. It told the story and statistics of VMI men who had served in the First World War and had been compiled by the Historiographer of V.M.I., Joseph R. Anderson, in 1920. This book seeks to add to that record.

Jim Campbell, graduated from VMI in the class of 1969. Also a history major, Jim enjoyed reading Tom's stories when he posted them originally on Facebook. Jim offered to work with Tom to lay out the book for publication.
