Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Thinking about virtual reference? Then this guide by reference expert and founder and director of Library Solutions Institute and Press is for you. Written in a clear, concise style, it leads the reader from the "Decision To Go Virtual" to "Moving to the Virtual Reference Desk" to "Building a Lively Service." Pertinent sidebars, room to annotate in the margins, and thought-provoking exercises lend an air of "workbookishness." There are also five appendixes of virtual reference support materials and a CD-ROM that reproduces all forms, surveys, and exercises included in the book. Lipow's experience-laden advice for those "somewhere along the path to providing virtual reference service" is timely and a very welcomed addition to this hot topic, supplementing such titles as the wide-ranging Digital Reference Service in the New Millennium: Planning, Management, and Evaluation, edited by David Lantes (Professional Media, LJ 1/01), and Mark Meola and Sam Stormont's narrower Starting and Operating Live Virtual Reference Services: A How-To-Do-It Manual for Librarians (Professional Media, LJ 11/15/02). Recommended for all libraries.-Janet Brewer, Murray State Univ. Lib., KY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
