Meet the Author

John Hattie has spent the bulk of his educational career as a teacher – in a primary, high and mostly in universities. He still works as a cricket coach, loves supervising thesis students and is proud of his cricket team’s performance and the 177 successful completions so far.

His career has been in 10-year stints. After 10 years in degree work in NZ and Toronto, he spent 10 years in New England, 10 years in Western Australia, slightly less than 10 years in North Carolina, 10 years in Auckland, and so far 1 year into his decade (perhaps) in Melbourne. Indeed he is a mover.

John learnt early that the key words in academia were “Publish or perish” although too often he prefers to mishear this as “Publish or Paris”. So 14 books, 400 papers, 400 conferences, and 1400 grocery lists later he still scribes away.

He is President of the International Test Commission, associate editor of the British Journal of Educational Psychology, on 20 editorial boards, advisor to Ministers of various persuasions, indeed will talk to anyone. This reflects his inordinate compulsivity.

He has been awarded a Gold Medal from Australian Principals, has won awards for leadership, teaching, supervision, and reviewing, awards for contribution to cricket and schools, awards for innovation in technology and public service, and Order of Merit from NZ in the Queens Birthday honours, and most important “best Dad from his three boys and dogs” and still working on earning “best husband award” from Janet. John’s complete 69 page vita, in single space and 10 point font, can be requested. It is really dull reading.

    Worth every cent!

    A book that encompasses studies in student achievement en masse. Allows you to review and reflect on a wide range of researched basef strategies and how they match up against each other. For teachers and administration
