There are those professions (and I use "professions" specifically) which some people seek that are difficult to succeed or even eke out a living in...most of them are in the creative category or the Arts, if you will. Photography is certainly one of those endeavors.
David duChemin recognizes that, and is frank about the hurdles facing the prospective photographer. However, when it is your calling (or vocation), then duChemin offers practical, honest advice on how to proceed, knowing that such a calling must be answered.
The conversational tone of the book never took a condescending turn nor did it offer up a cookie-cutter list of things to do to "make it big". If nothing in the world will make you happier than to be a photographer, then you should read this book. If you ARE a photographer, but are not pleased with the track your career has taken you thus far, you should read this book. If you're not into photography at all, it certainly offers some insight into why those who are, are.

If you're looking for a book to help you find your "style" or for inspiration then this isn't it. David duChemin is candidly honest about what it takes to make a living (and a life) from photography. To this end, most of the book is about how to market and brand yourself successfully. If you've ever thought about "going professional" even as a weekend warrior, I highly recommend that you read what David has to say. Whether this book helps you become hugely successful, mildly more successful, or keeps you from making the wrong career change it is worth its weight in gold.

Makes you think about the actual business mechanics required and does so in an easy to understand style and format. Nothing new, just a solid compilation of issues you need to plan for, be aware of and of the dirty, hard background work required.
