Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
The words of Isaiah, Matthew, and Luke from the King James Bible form the content of this true Christmas story. But the glory of it lies in the accompanying illustrations. These are primarily triptychs: magnificent three-part altarpieces lovingly reproduced with foldout wings. Here one can find the Cloister's "Annunciation" by Robert Campin; a Hans Memling; and especially a little-seen Hieronymus Bosch (which while not as fantastical as his more famous efforts, still shows his unmistakable touch.) The index at the rear gives further historical material on the paintings themselves. Small children will enjoy flipping the panels to find the surprises within, while adults will treasure the entire, perfect package.
Children's Literature - Deborah Zink Roffino
Fifteenth century triptychs, glorious three panel paintings, unfold, revealing the Christmas story in incomparable reverence. The accompanying narration, from the King James Version of the Bible, completes this awe-inspiring book. Each classic painting is catalogued and explained on the final pages.
School Library Journal
Gr 2 UpAn elegant book that combines excerpts from the King James Version of the Bible and Renaissance paintings. Full-color reproductions appear throughout; many of them are triptychs, the outer panels of which fold out from the page to give readers a three-dimensional view of the art. Each of the eight selections (one on the cover and seven inside) represent a different scene in the Christmas storythe Annunciation, the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi, etc.done by such masters as Hieronymus Bosch, Gerard David, and Hugo Van der Goes. The formal prose is well suited to the classical art that accompanies it. This title will hold greater appeal for adults than for children, although family sharing is certainly a good way to introduce it.
