Overview

A Psy/Changeling novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Shards of Hope, Shield of Winter, and Heart of Obsidian..."the alpha author of paranormal romance" (Booklist).
Used to cold silence, Faith NightStar is suddenly being tormented by dark visions of blood and murder. A bad sign for anyone, but worse for Faith, an F-Psy with the highly sought after ability to predict the future. Then the visions show her something even more dangerous—aching need…exquisite pleasure. But so powerful is her sight, so fragile the state of her mind, that the very emotions she yearns to embrace could be the end of her.
Changeling Vaughn D’Angelo can take either man or jaguar form, but it is his animal side that is overwhelmingly drawn to Faith. The jaguar’s instinct is to claim this woman it finds so utterly fascinating and the man has no argument. But while Vaughn craves sensation and hungers to pleasure Faith in every way, desire is a danger that could snap the last threads of her sanity. And there are Psy who need Faith’s sight for their own purposes. They must keep her silenced—and keep her from Vaughn…

I¿ve read Nalini Singh¿s first book of the Psy, Slave to Sensation, twice now. The first time I read it, I was struck by how original it was. The second time, I was struck by how enjoyable it was. With that being said, I had high expectations for Visions of Heat, but also some doubts that Ms. Singh would be able to sustain the originality and fun factor that made the first so enjoyable. I¿m pleased to be able to write that Visions of Heat is just as good if not better than the first. What made Visions of Heat so enjoyable were the characters and the world building and the dialogue and the chemistry and . . . well, just about everything. The world that was already so fully developed and realized only became richer and fuller this time around. The fear I sometimes have is that an author will successfully create an idea and some interesting characters . . . at first, but those characters will then go on to appear time and time again in successive books, although disguised under a different name and description. That is not the case, here. Faith and Vaughn are completely different from Sascha and Lucas . . . and if I¿m being honest, I think I liked them even more. Faith NightStar is one of the rarest Psy designations: a Foresight Psy aka an F-Psy. On top of that, she is probably the most talented and most successful of all F-Psys. Her predictions are strong and accurate and have earned her and her family billions. Unfortunately, her gifts have a downside. She lives secluded and alone, sheltered from the outside world that would overwhelm her mind (or so she is told). Her only visitors are her emotionless father and the cold M-Psys who monitor her every word, her every move and every beat of her heart. Faiths¿ façade of emotionless begins to crumble when her sister is killed and the murderer begins haunting her dreams. She sneaks away from her compound and sets off to find some answers with Sascha Duncan. Along the way, she is held up by the protective Vaughn. His behavior is unpredictable, his attitude is predatory and he is perhaps the most dangerous of the DarkRiver Changelings. Vaughn¿s own childhood was a terrible one. He remains haunted by the beloved sister he had to watch slowly die, unable to save her. Vaughn is immediately captivated by the very fragile Psy. He forces her to accept his touch little by little, alternating between patience and impatience in his desire for her. It¿s Vaughn who notices one night, that the killer that plagues Faith¿s dreams may be more than just a mental presence in her mind, and together they set out to find her sister¿s murderer. Visions of Heat starts off strong and stays that way right until the very end. Faith and Vaughn were two characters that at first seemed polar opposites- she: so fragile, he: so . . . borderline violent, but. . . Ms. Singh made it work very sucessfully. Their chemistry was great, but the emotional aspect, their love story, was very sweet as well. Faith¿s evolution from a sheltered and fragile Psy to a strong and resilient woman had me applauding and the mystery of her sister¿s killer kept me guessing. A couple characters were more fully developed this time around without taking the focus and interest away from our hero and heroine- there¿s nothing worse than wanting to read more about the secondary characters rather than the main ones. Luckily, just enough, but not too much, was given to tantalize us for the upcoming books and characters. Visions of Heat is an enjoyable and unique sequel to an enjoyable and unique book. I enjoyed it a great deal and I definitely recommend it.

Nalini Singh's fresh take on the world of paranormal is as gripping as ever, with strong action and a cast of interesting characters. Visions of Heat continues somewhat the original plot of the first book, Slave to Sensation. The Psy are a race known for their cold aloof facades and the deadly minds they cloak beneath. Thanks to a rigid race determined to conceal their slightest imperfections, killers are born, and it's up to the changelings once again to protect not only their own but the Psy as well. Faith Nightstar is the embodiement of a sheltered Psy. As an F-Psy able to predict the future, her talents are coveted by her family. Cocooned against the outside world, she's tucked away in her own compound, where she can predict safe things, things that make the PsyClan Nightstar very wealthy. When dark, disturbing visions begin to plague her at any given time, and a particular murder cuts too close to home, she knows she cannot ignore them...no matter how fragile her mind might be. Drawn to the enigmatic and unusual Psy, Changeling Vaughn D'Angelo uses his abilities as a jaguar to encroach on Faith's territory. He must tread carefully, for too much contact with the delicate Psy could send her senses into overload. He's determined to make her feel though and it's going to be on his terms. He sees strength in Faith and that's what he plans to draw forth in her, till she can handle exactly what he wants to give her. When visions of the killer cut too close to home, and the Psy come for her too, Vaughn will be there to catch Faith and dispense the remorseless justice changelings are known so well for. Vaughn's story was one I greatly looked forward to and came out pretty pleased with. An aloof character in the first book, it was interesting to read exactly what made up this single jaguar member of the DarkRiver leopards. As a sentinel for his adoptive clan, he's fierce, loyal and dangerously cunning. When he sets these talented sights on Faith it's an instant animal attraction that roars to the surface, ready to claim the confounding woman. Faith, knows her boundaries, and while she thinks there's no place for her in Vaughn's world, she proves herself to be invaluable to him and it's not for the cold reasons her Psyclan wants her. Their interactions make this installment worth the read. While the villain this time didn't stand out the way the previous book's baddy did, I found myself not minding in the least by book's end. Ms. Singh is a master at dishing up the details at just the right intervals, allowing her plots and subplots to flow beautifully amongst one another. Stay tuned for more from this fascination new world. Next up is Caressed by Ice, this time starring a Psy member as the hero. It releases September 4, 2007.

Singh's books are so well written. This was a joy to read. The world is well built and the characters consistent and developed well. There is a good balance between action, character growth and romance that makes it hard to put the story down.

If you haven't read her Psy/Changeling Series, you're missing out. Do yourself a favor and start with the first book (Slave to Sensation) and just order the whole series because you won't want to stop and you won't want to wait. Superb story telling and heroes to die for. The best of paranormal.

I loved this book. Faith the heroine is an F-Psy who is all about the intellect and very well protected or is that inprisoned by her family. Lately her visions have become very violent and enduces feeling which is not good for a person whose race supposedly has no feelings. Enter Vaughn a changling whose animal side is drawn to Faith very strongly. After Faith's sister is murdered she comes to understand that she must leave in order to one protect herself and to find who murdered her sister and bring him to justice. One of my favorite thing about Ms Singh's books is that they are definitely different than most of the other paranormal books on the market. She has given us a fantastic new world to play in and I like it.

I tore through the first book in this series but I savored this one a bit more. Listening to the audio as I did other work, I tried to force myself to take it slower but it was hard. The narrator in this on adds to the story. Her voice feels like it's a part of it all. For me, a narrator can make or break a story. This one made it better. Faith draws the changeling jaguar Vaughn even before she meets him. The cat's not sure why he's so interested in the secluded and heavily guarded compound but he watches and when a beautiful redhead psy sneaks out he pounces. These two are almost complete opposites. Vaughn feels deeply and is driven by instinct and a powerful body. Faith is a rare and valuable F-Psy who relies on her mind but can't handle the sensation of touch. As Vaughn follows his instincts and Faith puzzles things out with her mind, these two grow close. And the sexy? Yeah, there's a lot of that. Vaughn is driven by touch. He teaches Faith about it slowly and it ruptures into some pretty hot moments between these two. I love this world. So much depth. The mix of humans, changelings and psy make the dynamics complex and dynamic. The two extremes of instinct driven and unfeeling with the human in the middle sets up lots of parallel situation to today's world. I enjoy that. I love all the characters. It was great seeing Sascha and Lucas, who were the focus of book one, again. There are so many great secondary characters that will step up to have their own story. The author gives us bits and pieces that get me excited to read them. I look forward to Hawke, the leader of the wolves. Dorian's story is going to be great too. This was the first time I noticed Judd much and I'm a bit nervous but intrigued to read his story. Took long enough to find this series but I'm onboard and excited to plow through so many books that I'm sure I will love. The hunger for good paranormal is strong and this is one satisfying series. If you haven't started this series and you love paranormal with a heavy side of romance, then this series is the one for you.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 3/4 REVIEW:  Loved this book!! Love Vaughn!! Loved Faith!! Just plain loved! I have yet to pick up a Nalini Singh story and not totally be in love. Nalini is such an amazing storyteller and Angela Dawe brings the characters to life. This girl has a knack for voices!! It is amazing. And as always I love when I feel like I am in the story not just being read to. Angela does that. I never feel that she is just reading the works. I feel like I am right there with the characters.  If you are thinking about a book to read or listen too I would HIGHLY suggest picking up a copy of Vision of Heat, but if you have not read book 1 Slave to Sensation I would start there Disclaimer:  I purchased this book from Audible and this review is my own opinion and not a paid review.
