Eight hundred years ago, powerful witches let evil into the world. In atonement they abdicated their magic, living their lives without power. Now, in a world where witches are revealed, internment camps exist for the most powerful witches, the Awakening. Hastings, a pseudonym for bestselling Maureen Child, introduces Shea Jameson, the first witch to awaken under the guidance of her Eternal mate, Torin. Torin has watched over and lived with Shea during each of her lifetimes. Torin encourages Shea to awaken her powers, which begins with a fierce and heated mating ritual that will earn Torin a heartbeat and Shea eternal life. Once allied, they must recover an ancient artifact, the key to stopping a great evil, and defeat the forces trying to stop them. Cleverly, this series is set up with an unlimited number of Awakening witches, as "each will awaken in turn...every 30 days until the atonement is complete." Despite a complex premise, Shea and Torin heat up the page and other Eternals promise sparks in future novels. (Feb.)

It's a modern day witch hunt in The Awakening: Visions of Magic, Regan Hasting's compelling new novel. Magic - unwelcome, feared magic - has returned to the world. Even those people with the best of intentions can be accused. and that alone is enough to change their lives forever. None knows the danger better than young school teacher Shea Jameson. Yet, she can't ignore the plight of a student, because just being brushed by the mere existence of magic is enough for others to see you as tainted. Even as Shea thinks 'don't trust anyone,' even as she reminds herself about the possibility of spies, she chances helping another. The fast start gives way to increasingly fast action. Torin crashes into her life, hero rescuer? Or someone using her for his own ends? In a time when distrust is second nature, Shea so wants to trust. But what, exactly, is Torin? Torin could be anything - true love, soul mate.or utterly evil. We readers don't know if we should expect romance - or battle. We don't even know if Torin is truly human. They are undeniably connected - physically in the here and now by their tattoos -- but also, historically, by a past that claims them forever. Shea struggles with the abrupt change in her life -- and in the fractured society that defines what was, not so long ago, an ordinary community in a comprehensible world. All that changed with 'The Awakening.' The hint of the past (my mind goes right to the Legendary Salem Witch Trials) infuses this work with a sinister undertone, right from the start. It's all very contemporary and 'today,' but that connection to past events give the story an unusual, haunting depth. As we become attached to Shea, our dread grows. Her fear increases, and we can sense something more, always more, coming. Spine-tingling action and a completely original, fast-paced storyline characterize this work from beginning to end. Regan's writing style creates an intensely believable atmosphere. Her characters are what bring this all to life. Thought, action, emotion, all twine believably and build in reader sympathy throughout. Although the urban/paranormal is currently ever-increasing in popularity, Hasting's Visions of Magic is a fantastically magical standout. You won't need to be a fan of the genre to enjoy Visions of Magic. An Absolutely Must Read. Originally posted at Whipped Cream Reviews

Although not at fault as it was an avaricious coven that almost destroyed the world in their power grab centuries ago, Torin the Eternal Guardian and his peers were forced to wait centuries impatiently for the magic to reawaken so that he would finally be with his reincarnated witch. Like a cosmic joke the Reawakening has begun a decade ago in Long Beach, California. A warrior he seeks his mate. The power seekers use the reemergence of witches as a social divide issue. Witches are hunted and burned as obscene pariahs. Lincoln Middle School teacher Shea Jameson's aunt was executed as a witch, so her niece scampers from one locale to the next. Upset by what one of her students said happened to her mom, when a mugger tries to steal her purse using a knife, she reacts by calling for fire. Immediately, those in the school parking lot become a mob calling her witch. Torin saves her but she is now hunted. He knows she is his destiny, but as they team up with other such pairings, they must erect a potentially lethal artifact while the government leaders send mercenaries to hunt them down. The first Awakening urban romantic fantasy uses the premise that government and other patriots act by ignoring the First Amendment rights under the guise of national security; which in real American history has occurred. Using that theme of a race hunted down i.e., Japanese-Americans sent to camps during WWII, Regan Hastings provides a powerful but dark thriller. The story line is fast-paced with deep characterizations that make the Awakening of magic seem real. However, it is the underlying social issue of burning the Bill of Rights that makes this a terrific cautionary tale; mindful of Benjamin Franklin's warning: "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security". Cheese-tastic. Don't get me wrong, I love a good romance novel, and don't mind the "you are mine"s and the "we will be one"s, but I can only take so much. Although the world development was interesting, I didn't feel like there was much to this story. The majority of the book was the two of them banging (and the sex scenes were repetitive and not even that good) and talking about how great the two of them are together and how they're meant to be together. OK already, I get it! And while I was feeling the connection from Torin's side, I wasn't really getting the chemistry coming from Shae. I pretty much skimmed the whole second half of the book. I don't plan on continuing this series unless other people who didn't like this first book tell me the series totally turns around, because it has the potential to be good but this one just fell flat.

This was definitely a steamy read. Interesting story, although not entirely new. Good read.

This book was kinda slow, But the story was pretty good, however it did end with some loose ends, I know there is a second book in this series, I wont be rushing to read it, but I'll get there eventually, have to see how the story continues, pretty sure Regan Hastings can make this a lengthy series. Meet Shea, she's a witch but doesn't quite know it yet, this is the story of her coming into her powers.

I usually do not like paranormal romances but this one was great. It is a little slow at the beginning but once you catch on to the plot and characters it is a page turner....and the Eternal's WOW! I want one!!!

I really liked this book. Its not like all the other paranormal romances out there today, its definitely original. The first 100 pages or so are a wee bit slow going, but once it picks up from there, its so worth the wait. And Torin... Yum. Talk about dedication and love. I can't wait for the next one.
