Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Leis-Newman
Readers will learn the complete process of going to the dentist, from why one needs to go to whether or not the dentist will hurt. The tone is geared toward making a place that can be scary even for adults into a non-threatening trip for the elementary student. From "what happens when I arrive" and "what happens to when I go in?" to "what does the dentist need to check?" there's a two-sentence answer on each page. The words probe, mirror, filling, fluoride, receptionist, tooth decay and X-ray are bolded as words in the picture glossary. While fillings are addressed, there is no dwelling on dental pain. The book concludes with "how to care for your teeth" which includes the obvious—brush—and the practical, such as eating healthy food rather than sugary treats. There's nothing inaccurate here, and the book was vetted by a dentist. If there's one a major drawback overall, it's that the large color photographs feel dated when showing the dental environment. It's not a must-have for a library, but a perfectly reasonable addition. This is part of the Heinemann Read and Learn series "Growing Up" and is listed as a Level K. Reviewer: Elizabeth Leis-Newman
