A classic Lorrie Moore story from her beloved collection Like Life, “Vissi d’Arte” is funny, bright, a little sad, biting: a brokenhearted love song to art and New York City.
Harry is a playwright who lives in Times Square. His bathroom floods; his surgeon girlfriend has left for the Upper West Side; and trucks have started idling outside his window at nighttime, where the hookers had always been. He is the type of man who lives for art, and someday his majestic, monumental, unfinished play will come rushing out of his head. Here is the perfect introduction to a much imitated, but never eclipsed, true American voice. In the words of The Plain Dealer, “There’s no other writer quite like Lorrie Moore.”

Maddy awoke with a throbbing headache. "Ugh...what happened? Where am I?" She had no memory of what had happened. The stuff that had been used to knock her out made sure of that. It was dark. She couldnt see anything, not even her hand in front of her face. She tried to acream but the sound was lost. She couldnt see, hear, smell, or feel anything. Suddenly light hit her. She tried to close her eyes against the sudden glare but couldnt. There was a woman's face outside some sort of glass that Maddy was encased in. The woman spoke "Hello dear. I understand you may be...confused. Allow me to introduce myself. Im doctor Madrine. Ill be the doctor attending to you." Dr.Madrine looked over a clipboard muttering to herself. "Healthy....well developed...perfectly stable...emotionally sound...ready for tests." Maddy freaked out inside her head. "Yes this is a science lab. Yes you will be experimented on and yes there are others here. Theres a difference with you dear. Your body is advanced iit can take more changes therefore unlike other subjects you will be put through more...physically related tests and not be let go for a loooong time. Dont be scared dear. Its an honor." Maddy wanted to scream. But she was locked in an upright position in this giant glass tube until this psycho let her out. (This was shorter than I'd like to have it. Now ill start taking character applications such as doctors and subjects. If you have a test subject put what they have had done to them. Any feedback is welcomed)
