From The CriticsReviewer: Lois Gesn, MD (Ochsner Health Center - Baton Rouge)
Description: This visual aid to the diagnosis of pediatric problems includes pearls along with the photographs, most of which are in color and all of which present stellar examples of the condition. The uncluttered text and charts use subtle color schemes that make them easy to read. Unlike the first edition published in 2006, this update includes treatment and referral guidelines, as well as online access to the full text and image gallery.
Purpose: The editors' goal is to provide an efficient diagnostic tool for a multitude of pediatric conditions using visual aids and focused text. Without being overwhelmed by a large volume of information, readers are quickly and systematically guided in the diagnostic approach to a given condition.
Audience: The intended audience includes pediatric practitioners at all levels of training and experience. Students and residents will find the visual aids invaluable and more experienced practitioners will appreciate the efficiency of the book as a whole.
Features: An initial chapter describes newborn conditions and each of the remaining 14 chapters is devoted to a particular body region. The format for each chapter is the same, including key points of the history and physical, recommendations for further evaluation, and subspecialty referral. The text is essentially a list of pediatrics pearls and is not intended to provide details of each condition. The side-by-side photographs aid in distinguishing similar conditions. The differential diagnosis charts provide diagnostic considerations as well as treatment guidelines. Referral guidelines are brief and to the point.
Assessment: This beautiful, well-organized book is an invaluable quick reference diagnostic tool for pediatric practitioners, as well as a great teaching and board review tool. The addition of treatment and referral guidelines to this edition is much appreciated. It is a welcome and worthy addition to any pediatric library.
