Visual Poetry: A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs
The first thing a reader of Visual Poetry will notice is that, unlike most photography books-which are about photographic how-tos-this volume is much more about photographic whys. To be sure, there all the how-tos any photographer could want, but they are primarily in support of the real theme of Visual Poetry: asking the photographer to get in touch with, not only the subjects of his or her images, but also, the reasons behind why the images are worth taking.
Author, Chris Orwig, besides being an excellent photographer, is also a philosopher of photography. This duality is evident in Chris' approach to this book, dividing each chapter-whether it be about "Learning to See," "Action and the Great Outdoors" or "The Path to Becoming a Professional"-into the following sections:

Chris asks photographers to become involved in each image they make: to make conscious decisions about-among other things-what to include, what to leave out, whether to make an image subject obvious or abstract and which lens to use to best accomplish a picture's intent. And to help the reader along, he provides practical, guided exercises (Workshops) to get the reader up out of his or her chair and trying out new techniques.
For me, an added bonus to Visual Poetry was the author's inclusion of cameo lectures by other well-known photographers, such as, Joyce Tenneson, Steve McCurry and Douglas Kirkland. They share both personal anecdotes and photographic approaches that help further encourage the reader to learn new skills.
Chris' book is not a quick read, but neither is it intended to be read straight through, cover to cover. Rather, its goal is, Workshop by Workshop, to get the reader behind the camera and actually creating his or her own visual poetry.

I have enjoyed every single page of this book. I feel like Chris Orwig is right here with me, teaching me, talking to me, taking me on field trips, giving me the opportunity to meet famous photographers. This book has really opened up learning opportunities for me. I am a very thirsty/hungry photographer...always seeking more knowledge in the field. I have also recommended this book to my colleagues. Many kudos to Chris Orwig for being inspired to write a very helpful book. This book will remain on top of my book pile....excellent reference book!

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.Chris Orwig teaches photography for a living, but rather than a dry, academic tome, he gives us a rich, passionate workshop in a book. Several workshops actually, as, after a vibrant and inspiring general opening section, he takes the reader through several shooting styles. These sections focus on methods and gear for each style and are quite good, but where Orwig really shines is in the opening section where his love of and passion for photography is let loose. This turns a very solid book (for the technical info presented) into a must have book.

Recorriendo específicos tipos de fotografía (retratos, familias y niños, matrimonios, viajes, acción, entre otros), cada capítulo está lleno de tips prácticos e historias inspiradoras que de forma instantánea ayudan a progresar en el arte de capturar momentos.
Es uno de esos libros donde uno más que leer a un experto en el tema uno se encuentra con una persona al otro lado, contándote historias personales que refuerzan el concepto que está tratando de lograr, de esta forma te hace sentir en la compañía de un amigo, que te brinda una dosis de inspiración, nuevas perspectivas y una aire fresco.

Otra gran característica de este libro es que el enfoque es más de Workshop, en forma de pequeños cursos. Al finalizar cada capítulo de la parte II, nos encontramos con Workshop Assignments, con lecturas adicionales, propuestas para tomas fotográficas y la posibilidad de compartir las fotos en el grupo creado en flickr para tal efecto (www.flickr.com/groups/visual-poet). Si esta buscando ideas para mejorar, estas tareas son las adecuadas.
El lenguaje es muy personal, de esta forma tanto pueden llegar los conceptos a un fotógrafo profesional como al fotógrafo aficionado que esté interesado en conocer más de la fotografía.
