This is an excellent monograph summarizing the field of vitamin D research. The book covers both basic research into the mechanisms of action and physiology of vitamin D and clinical applications of this information to human disease. The book attempts to provide a definitive, up-to-date, comprehensive resource on vitamin D that would be of use to researchers in different disciplines. This is certainly a worthy objective, since there is a large volume of new basic and clinical information in this field. The book meets the editors' main objective very well. The intended audience is basic and clinical researchers in the endocrinology or biochemistry of vitamin D. However, students, postdoctoral fellows, young investigators, established scientists, and clinicians in the field of bone biology in general will benefit from this textbook. The editors are international experts in this field and most of the contributors are very credible authorities in their areas. The book is clearly and appropriately illustrated with black-and-white drawings and photographs and several color plates describing bone histomorphometry. References are current and pertinent. The table of contents is logically organized, and the index provides sufficient detail to help the reader find almost any topic covered in the book. This monograph will be useful to both new and accomplished students of vitamin D biology, and to some degree, to the practicing clinician with an interest in metabolic bone disease. It fills a major void not currently filled by other textbooks in the field, and is likely to become the standard against which future textbooks in vitamin D biology will be compared. The book will likely bepurchased by medical libraries, medical bookstores, and scientists and clinicians interested in vitamin D.

Description: This two volume set provides a comprehensive collection of reviews that encompass all areas of vitamin D function. The prior edition was published in 1997 and there is ample new material to justify this second edition.
Purpose: The goal is to offer a complete coverage of all aspects of vitamin D function and metabolism. Given the importance of this molecule, the objective is worthwhile and was well achieved.
Audience: Although not intended for students, any investigator (including doctoral candidates) will find worthwhile material here — this includes a broad range of clinicians that should be conversant with the physiological roles of this vitamin. The editors have assembled a highly capable group of contributors.
Features: The 104 separate contributions are grouped into 10 sections. The initial chapters cover the chemistry and metabolism of vitamin D, role in mineralization, other target organs, and general physiological effects. Deficiency problems (including diagnosis, interactions in the endocrine system, and involvement in malignancies) are additional, more clinically oriented sections in the second volume. A short concluding series focuses on potential new applications of vitamin D and related molecules. Each of the chapters is accompanied by a detailed bibliography, thus providing readers with an encyclopedic resource to the original literature. Any investigator working in this area (broadly speaking, this includes chemists, bioscientists and clinicians) will find useful material here. An additional virtue for the experimental scientist is the opportunity to develop a broad appreciation of the range of activity of vitamin D. Although the health effects of vitamin D have been known for many years (one of the earliest commercial "biotechnology" developments was the irradiation of milk to provide vitamin D to growing children — the Steenbock patent), its role as a hormone and mediator of many physiological processes has come to light more recently. A final note: investigators working in far removed areas may well find useful nuggets within these volumes.
Assessment: An encyclopedic and thorough work — a virtual must for most medical libraries. The index is excellent and the bibliographic citations of high value.

Meet the Author

David Feldman, MD, is Emeritus Professor of Medicine (Active) at Stanford University School of Medicine where he has been on the faculty since 1974. He has been a full professor since 1984 and was chief of the Endocrinology Division for 10 years. His laboratory studies the role of steroid hormone receptors, particularly the vitamin D receptor, and its mechanism of action. His current major research focus is hormone-dependent cancer including breast cancer and prostate cancer and the pathways by which vitamin D inhibits cancer growth. Professor Feldman is actively involved in both basic science approaches to the anti-cancer actions of vitamin D as well as to clinical trials studying the use of vitamin D in breast and prostate cancer. Professor Feldman was recently honored with an award for a Career of Outstanding Contributions to Vitamin D Research. He has authored over 290 medical research articles, reviews, editorials, and book chapters. In addition to being a co-editor of all four editions of OSTEOPOROSIS, he is the editor-in-chief of Vitamin D, just published in its third edition.
