Vivaldi Adagios

All Music Guide - James Manheim
Extracting only the slow movements from Vivaldi's concertos is an odd idea, for they are carefully calibrated to their surroundings. Vivaldi's is an art of maximum contrasts within fairly fixed forms, and the slow movements contribute to that, with gently rhythmic tunes or even near-stasis juxtaposed with the programmatic effects or spectacular sweep of the outer movements. Presented alone, they may indeed provide the "over 2 hours of the world's most relaxing music" promised on the cover here. You don't need Vivaldi for that -- one of those old new age piano albums will do just fine. But if for some reason you think these particular slow movements, mostly for violin and ...

But if for some reason you think these particular slow movements, mostly for violin and orchestra, will help you wind down, you can buy this disc with confidence. The performers were the mostly English stars of 1980s Baroque music, some of them using conventional instruments and others the then-newfangled historically accurate Baroque bows and playing techniques. Whichever is used, the performances are decorous and technically adept, with smooth string tone. They date from between 1974 and 1992; the earliest ones, of the "Four Seasons" violin concertos, are by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble unparalleled for a sweet, homogeneous instrumental blend. Performances of the "Four Seasons" since then have generally opted for a bit more oomph, but again, there's nothing here to interfere with your relaxation.
