Overview

There's more to Vivaldi than "The Four Seasons." A lot more. Igor Stravinsky once quipped that Vivaldi wrote the same concerto hundreds of times, but this collection offers ample evidence that these works were not made with a cookie cutter. In truth, Vivaldi was a daring innovator who loved using instruments in new combinations to create a brilliant palette of sonic colors. Compare the airy twang of the Concerto in G for two mandolins with the shiny majesty of the Concerto in C for two trumpets, or the mysteriously dark Concerto in G minor for two cellos with the playful warbling of the Concerto in C for sopranino recorder. There are many fine Vivaldi collections available, but this generous compilation of invigorating performances led by three leading period instrument conductors -- Christopher Hogwood, Philip Pickett, and Joshua Rifkin -- is one of the best.
