Vivaldi: Late Violin Concertos

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - EJ Johnson
Following their critically acclaimed recording of the Four Seasons, violinist Giuliano Carmignola, harpsichordist/director Andrea Marcon, and the Venice Baroque Orchestra return with this splendid collection of six late Vivaldi violin concertos. The earlier release paired the Four Seasons with three unrecorded concertos, but here they wipe the slate clean of well-known Vivaldi and perform a full program of unrecorded and unjustly neglected repertoire.
Unlike Vivaldi's early works, which were widely circulated in printed collections, these concertos were written for individual patrons and existed only in manuscript form until the mid-20th century. Freed from the demands of popular taste, Vivaldi experimented as never before in these late works, writing wonderfully inventive, unconventional, and boldly virtuosic music. Carmignola is surely one of the brightest stars in the early music firmament, and he plays brilliantly here, continually varying the tempo and articulations while inventively shading the dynamics and tone color to suit the phrase at hand. And the Venice Baroque Orchestra, led by Marcon at the keyboard, follows his every twist and turn. Marcon and Carmignola have already demonstrated the remarkable imagination and enthusiasm they bring to Vivaldi's music, so one's reaction this time is less one of surprise than of continued admiration and delight. This is a collaboration to follow closely, and we can hope that their first two recordings represent only a beginning. As for this disc, the sound is warm and full, and it is simply not to be missed.
Gramophone - Lindsay Kemp
The performances are first-rate. Giuliano Carmignola...is a highly accomplished soloist, able to negotiate Vivaldi's complex lines with great assurance and a wide variety of attacks and articulations... The Venice Baroque Orchestra are lithe and alert, and produce a marvelously full sound, with bass notes positively thundering out of the recording's ample acoustic.
