Overview

“Thank goodness . . . for Mark Steel. Engagingly lighthearted while clearly thorough, the author has taken the events of the French Revolution and given them a human face, as well as neatly poking fun at the over-pomposity with which our recent historians have dealt with the period.”—The Observer

“With Vive La Revolution [Steel] examines the raw material of 1789, not so much in search of laughs as in an attempt to reclaim the first popular revolution from the dry historians.”—Scotsman

“A cross between a history of the French Revolution and a spirited defense of the ideals that inspired it.”—The Independent

“Steel expertly guides the reader through the philosophies, protagonists, failures and serious legacy of the events of 1789.”—Guardian

Vive la Revolution is an uproariously serious work of history. Brilliantly funny and insightful, it puts individual people back at the center of the story of the French Revolution, telling this remarkable story as it has never been told before.

For the Haymarket edition, Steel has added a new preface for North American readers and revised the book to address parallel themes in US history.

BEST BOOK ON THE FRENCH REVOLUTIOn

I know that is a bold claim, but let me explain. I loved this book. It is very accessable and laugh-out-loud funny. The books gives a simple, complete look at the French Revolution. If you have ever read other books on the revolution like Sutherland's "France 1789-1815", you wil know that this monumental event is often presented in an incredibly confusing manner. Not so with this book. It looks at all events from multiple angles, deals in many of the revolution's personalities, and applies concepts to today. And to top it off, hes hilarious. It is the perfect introduction to the French Revolution and, unless you intend to become an expert on the topic, I dont know how much further you will need to look. A few things to keep in mind: The author supports the revolution. Most historians are dead set against it, but this author explains his positions and you cant help but to see where he is comming from. He is not incredibly biased as he attacks the Left and the Right equally. He is very good with analogies. THe author is from Great Britain, so there were some jokes that I did not get the full impact of. But that does not in ANY WAY diminish the book. I would recommend this book to anyone, even to those without much historic background. This is definitely now on my list of favorites!
