It's 1786 and Dr. Viveca Lancaster is frustrated by the limits placed upon female physicians of color. When she is offered the chance to set up a practice in the small all Black community of Grayson Grove, Michigan she leaves her California home and heads east. The very determined Viveca is one of the few nineteenth century Black women to graduate from the prestigious Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania but she needs more than determination to facedown handsome Nate Grayson, the Grove's bull-headed mayor. Nate Grayson goes to the train station expecting Dr. V. Lancaster to be a man. When the lovely dark-skinned Viveca introduces herself he is speechless, then wants her back on the train and out of his town. It's 1876 and women aren't supposed to be doctors, men are. However he isn't prepared for her stubbornness and fire, nor for the vivid way she heals, then steals his heart.

    Great book

I love Beverly Jenkins historicals and contemporarys. I learn so much about black and native American history. And the story is great too. Thoroughly enjoyed the story of Vivid.

    Why change

I read this book many years ago and many times since then. After Topaz, it is my favorite. I don't understand the new cover. Its to modern for a story that took place so long ago. I hope you don't plan to reissue all of your historical fiction books with modern covers. Its just wrong. For anyone who hasn't, Vivid is a must read. The story is timeless and portrays a strong woman and her strong man perfectly. Ms. Jenkins is my favorite author. Whatever she writes is a winner.

A Story Too Great To Miss! Review by Big Ed's Girl

This is another wonderful example of Beverly Jenkins' uncanny knack for combining romance and history with spellbinding effect; buy this one and treat yourself to an unforgettable book that demands more than one read! I also heartily reccomend her books Indigo, Through the Storm, and Winds of the Storm; they all have my 5 star rating and I guarantee you won't be able to put them down once you start reading!

    Wonderful Read

This book was recommended by a friend and I truly enjoyed it. It was very entertaining, funny and heroic as well as informative. A great romance that kept me smiling and blushing. This is my first time reading the author's works but it will not be the last. I would highly recommend this book and the author.

    I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!

This book was so good I read in 2 days. I couldn't put my nook down. I loved this beautifully told story set in the 1800's. I loved the african american history and the romance. I do have an issue with their not being a dark skinned woman on the cover since Vivid was so beautifully dark skinned.

I'm in love with this book. I never really liked books set before, during slavery or after slavery but I must admit I'm loving BJ's history lessons in her books. Well done!!!

    Disappointed

I am a fan of Beverly Jenkins previous work. And one of the reasons I purchased this book, was because of the characters Galeno Vachon and Raymond Leveq. In which the author states in the end of her book "Indigo" that the Vachons were mentioned there. Since I loved this character, I was hoping to read more about him in Vivid. Galeno or Caleb is mentioned but as a older person. Even Hester's last name was not Wyatt. And with Gail Grayson in Indigo her son's name was Jake. But here in Vivid-he has another name?
The author has a tendency to change things around. And it is not consistent. Such as in Through the Storm -Raymond's name is changed to Raimond. For me it takes away from the character, when these details are changed. I did like the story of Veveca becoming the first woman doctor though in the area. Even if in the beginning the people were too small minded to appreciate her.

    Her books must be read!!!!!

I have read all of her books. They are great. Even the two that are more for the adolescent reader were very good. They have history, romance, laughter, passion and plots that will keep you entertained until the end.
