Voice of an Angel

Barnes & Noble - Benjamin Ivry
We're fascinated with child prodigy musicians because these innocent-looking youngsters have astonishing gifts that makes them sound like adults. Twelve-year-old Welsh soprano Charlotte Church has the clear voice of a child in a church choir and the vibrato of a grown-up. Voice of an Angel, Church's debut recording, is guided by the nurturing and gentle conductor Siân Edwards, who leads the Welsh Opera Orchestra and what sounds like a choir of coal miners filling a rugby stadium with mighty sound.
Church appropriately bypasses the big opera arias, offering familiar tunes by British composers such as Parry, Holst, and Harty, as well as three charmingly nature-oriented Welsh bird songs by Elwyn-Edwards. Although it is not specified in the CD booklet, the young singer apparently performs the roles of both Hansel and Gretel in a duet from Humperdinck's opera, and she does so winningly. The booklet does explain, a propos of the fur-cloaked image of Church on the cover, that "Charlotte Church does not wear real fur." Give her a few decades, at least, and this budding diva should be swathed in mink like the best of 'em.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Given that she was merely 12 years old when she released her debut album Voice of an Angel, and that she is certainly cute, it may be easy for observers to dismiss Charlotte Church as the product of mere marketing, but that's not really the case. Yes, she is a marketer's dream, but her soprano voice is alluring, accomplished, and sweet -- even if it's not quite the voice of an angel, it comes close. And that's the reason why millions of listeners were wooed by Voice of Angel: Church is talented, young, and adorable. She's a good singer, sure, but one with enough talent to make her more than a special interest story. However, she is also the kind of singer that isn't well-regarded by classical purists for a variety of reasons, chief among them being the special-interest story itself. It's a double-edged sword, actually, since her very age makes her noteworthy to a wider audience, but not to the aficionados of opera, since she doesn't possess the skill that would make her a great artist in the view of many critics. Yet Voice of an Angel should be judged as a record, apart from Church's age. On that level, it succeeds -- particularly if it's viewed as a debut album. Yes, the material is pretty familiar -- "Ave Maria," "Amazing Grace," and "Danny Boy" all make appearances -- and because Church doesn't really offer revolutionary interpretations of the songs, she is open to criticisms from some opera critics. However, she has such a nice voice that it will be easy for many listeners to overlook the obviousness of the material and just enjoy the sweet music; Voice of an Angel certainly has its fair share of that.

    Voice From God

This is such a beautiful voice! The first time i remeber hearing her sing was when i was a small child two years younger than her when i listened to her album , "Voice of an angel" in my father t-bird 62, since then i have been in love with her voice.

    I liked this CD

I'm not really wild about this CD. I would recommend it however, if you understand the Latin and Welsh she sings in. I prefer her other CD's better, but she still did a great job.

    Great for her age!

As a singer for the Pennsylvania Academy of Music, the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, the Fulton Opera House, and the Dutch Apple Dinner theatre, and a thirteen year old who started all of these jobs around the age of eight, I can understand the criticism of Ms. Church's adolescent voice; I myself am experiencing the ever hated voice change at this point in time. I must say that some of the statements I've read are...interesting... I especially enjoyed the ones about making Ms. Church raise her voice to fill the auditoriums. I must say, it's not especially hard to do, you just need a good voice trainer. For a twelve year old, she's very talented. I would like to hear her after her voice change, though; as a singer who was at the top of the soprano range before my voice changed, I'm near the bottom of the soprano range after my voice change...but I'm working my way up!

    Truly from Heaven

As an indivual that has enjoyed fine music since early childhood, Charolett Church, in my humble opinion, is truly bless from above. Miss Church will hopefully inspire other artist to follow in this area of music. Her refreshing voice is a joy to hear.

    Songs Straight from Heaven

The first time I listened to this album I was almost in tears. The first song is 'Pie Jesu', which is one of my favourite songs. I love anything Andrew Lloyd Webber has written. But this young lady is blessed with a truly beautiful gift - a voice that is so expressive and clean and pure. Whatever she doesn't yet have in technique she makes up for with pure loveliness of spirit. All these songs are wonderfully rendered, and for a twelve year old girl, this album is simply exquisite.

Waving Hello and many Thanks to Charlotte!!!

I think for a young 12 year old girl with a voice like Charlotte's you can't beat that. I think she did such a wonderful job on the album when she made this. Make some more when you have the time. We all love your voice Charlotte. Keep up the great work.

    Beautiful!

I loved this cd, even if I didn't know what she was saying half the time (well, actually more than half). I agree she out to anunciate better, but I don't think she needs to mature anymore. I think her voice is beautiful enough as it is. As long as she doesn't strain herself to much, I think it is perfectly all right for her to be singing now. Oh, and to all those big opera singers that complain that she isn't very good, you're just jealous. Why don't you just appreciate the beauty that God bestowed upon her voice instead of moaning because you don't have quite as great a gift? Anywho, I loved it!

    Inspirational

I, like many others, heard this truly inspiring voice on our local public broadcast station and have been mesmorized ever since. I know there are a few dooms dayers who thinks she is to young and will burn her voice out before she reachs her prime, but they probably said that about others too. Even if she does she has done a lot for opera since I normally don't listen to it,now I have a desire to listen more since our ''Voice of an Angel'' has come onto the scene. Wish her all the luck and blessings in the world. She will truly put you in the Christmas spirit with her Christmas album. Merry Christmas

    Allelujah!

I have played great tricks on my friends by playing this record and only then informing them of her tender age; Charlotte, I've made more than a few converts for you! The sound that issues forth from deep inside this young girl is truly something from above. Anyone needing to re-connect with their inner spirit will find this work invaluable.

    An Astonishing Voice

This is actually the third copy that I bought. One for myself, one for my brother-in-law, and now for a friend of mine. I just wanted to propagate to the whole world how this young and beautiful girl sings. Her voice is truly amazing! She can sing those operatic songs wherein you can understand the words unlike other singers. An excellent Soprano indeed. Bravo Charlotte!!!
