School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-9--America's Past draws on primary sources to highlight American history from Columbus's voyages to the Indies to Geraldine Ferraro's campaign for the vice-presidency in 1984. Around the World excerpts journals, diaries, and autobiographical works to describe geographic regions and the people who live there. In both books, each unit begins with introductory comments, an overview, and maps. Terms that may be unfamiliar to readers are printed in bold face and defined in the margins. Full-color, above-average illustrations complement the material; ethnic, cultural, and gender representations appear to be equal. These volumes will be useful as supplementary material in the social studies curriculum, and may spur students to go on to the original materials for reports and further reading. --Andrew W. Hunter, Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg, Charlotte, NC
