Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Gisela Jernigan
Using interviews and many striking black and white photos, the author shows us the lives of eight former gang members (one as young as 12). She lets them speak to us about how and why they joined gangs, the pros and cons of gang life, how they managed to leave the gangs, their present lives and hopes for the future. A variety of young people both male and female, from different ethnic groups, varied family situations and different parts of the country are profiled. This moving collection of "voices from the street" could be informative for adults needing to know more about gangs, preventative for kids who might be tempted to join gangs and inspirational for kids who want to leave gangs and for those who want to help them. A glossary, recommended reading and other especially useful sections on how to get help and intervention programs are included. A brief section featuring ex-gang members' quotes about hope add to the upbeat, positive value of this timely book.
School Library Journal
Gr 7 UpIn this revealing book, Atkin shares interviews with former gang members she met, photographed, and interviewed in a two-year odyssey to document why young people join gangs and how they terminate memberships and reenter society's mainstream. Brandy England, a white middle-class teen from Ohio, joined a gang to get her mother's attention. Saroeum Phoung joined the Boston Red Dragons with other Cambodian youths to gain a sense of cultural identity and to stave off racist physical attacks. Elena Rojas, a first-generation Cuban-American living in Miami, wanted to escape physical abuse from a former boyfriend. Patrick is an Irish-Puerto Rican who lives in a Massachusetts town where violence is simply accepted as a way of life. Following the first-person accounts of these four young people, Atkin additionally profiles former gang members and other concerned adults who spend their lives trying to save young people from the destructive effects of gangs. The book is liberally illustrated with the author's stark black-and-white photos. The young people's comments are largely unedited, which means there is plenty of street language in the narratives. Nothing in them offends as much, however, as the horrors of their lives. All have witnessed the violent deaths of friends and family, and many have been forced to cope with dysfunctional parents. An extremely powerful and revealing book that deserves to be read by a much, much wider audience than it is unfortunately likely to receive.Jerry D. Flack, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs
Kirkus Reviews
In a work subtitled "Young Former Gang Members Tell Their Stories," Atkin offers readers what for most of them will be a rare and realistic glimpse of life in a street gang, through a series of searingly honest interviews.

The reasons the participants join a gang vary: substitutes for splintered families, mutual protection, shared ethnicity. The casual discussion of street violence chills; one young woman shrugs off drive-by shootings as a way for dealing with anger, and the numerous mentions of gang-related suicides, murders, and rapes become nearly unbearable. In common are the speakers' confessions of feeling dead themselves, numb from all the chaos surrounding them. The good news is that these same young people now feel alive, healthy, and in control of their lives. The second half of the book presents interviews with ex-gang members and social workers who have established programs to educate, nurture, and train young people who want to change their lives. Black-and-white photographs bring another level of authenticity to their plight; a glossary of slang and technical terms proves handy as well. Alex Kotlowitz provides a foreword (not seen).
