What would American Buddhism be like?

The chapters of this book are authored by many different meditation teachers and most of them are native to the United States. These born-Americans practiced in India, Japan, Thailand, etc., and became certified Buddhist teachers and then came back to the U.S. to teach. It has been said that Buddhism is transformed by every country it inhabits, and in Voices of Insight, we get a pretty good look at what Buddhism transforms into when it arrives in twenty-first-century America. It¿s really quite something: practical, profound, and intelligent. Because of the way this book was written, it will not only enhance your meditation practice, it can serve as an excellent primer on basic Buddhism. You¿ll get a good history of Siddhartha Gotama, you¿ll learn what nirvana and samsara are, and you¿ll get a clear understanding of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. An excellent chapter by Joseph Goldstein on the art and science of meditation gave me the most understandable explanation I¿ve ever gotten about what meditation is for and exactly what to do while meditating. I think that chapter alone is worth the price of the book. I believe Voices of Insight will help you improve your practice in important ways. It is enjoyable to read and it is interesting, but more important, it has practical value. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, so I'm what you might call an expert on what is really helpful versus what only sounds good, and Voices of Insight is not only illuminating, it is applicable and truly helpful.
