Overview

Judy Zionts Fox and Mia Roldan survey survivors of parental suicide, delving into the ways their lives have been affected and shaped by this life-changing event. Addressing many of their emotional, psychological and physical effects, sons and daughters reveal their reactions throughout their respective lives. The authors offer survivors helpful strategies and steps to gain comfort, deal with memories, find recovery and realize promising, productive futures.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Death is a painful experience for all who are left behind. Yet in the case of suicide, sorrow is often intensified by lingering stigma, guilt, resentment, and other conflicting emotions. Fox, a registered psychiatric nurse and social worker, and Roldan, a teacher and social work student, bring a special sensitivity to this work since both lost parents to suicide. Drawing on their personal experience and interviews with 57 other survivors, they analyze in Part 1 how such a loss affects different age groups. For example, adolescents tend to resist mourning and focus on a return to normalcy. The authors suggest which actions may be helpful or hurtful to survivors. Part 2 addresses practical issues and concerns from the need for help "cleaning up" after a suicide to how to find a therapist/support group. Finally, the authors discuss recovery issues, explaining the stages of the grieving process, the role of religion, forgiveness, and nonjudgmental reports of appearances and dream encounters with lost loved ones. The book ends on a hopeful note, showing that survivors' lives aren't automatically shattered by such a heartbreaking experience. A candid yet compassionate approach to a difficult topic, this book is strongly recommended for grief counseling collections.

Outstanding Book for Anyone Touched by Suicide

'Voices of Strength: Sons and Daughters of Suicide Speak Out,' is one of those special works that I could not put down until I finished reading the entire book. 'Voices of Strength: Sons and Daughters of Suicide Speak Out' does exactly what the authors, Judy Zionts Fox, RN, LSW, and Mia Rolden, intended and more. It calls out to and helps the living after a suicide, enables the reader to better understand the subject of suicide, and has potential in preventing suicide. The book is unique in that it contains interviews by many touched by suicide, first responders to a suicide, and members of the clergy. The text includes much beyond the subject of suicide. This book includes useful information that is applicable to many situations, such as specific information on how to select a mental health professional. I wish to suggest that anyone working with survivors of suicide and those touched by suicide read this incredible research work dealing with a most difficult subject. Where does the insight included in the book come from or why do lemons turn into an eternal spring of lemonade? Read the book and decide for yourself. Thank you Judy and Mia, for your long term efforts in creating a work for those touched by suicide.
