Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
From the folklore of the Native Americans of Mexico comes the legend of the voladores, who flew from the tallest pole in the square to bring back the sun's blessing. Young Tiger practices his flute and hopes to fly one day. But the volcano and the rain god, jealous of the sun, keep the voladores from flying. Brave Tigre volunteers to fly to the wind god to ask his help. Tigre's flute helps persuade the wind to blow away the clouds so the sun will shine again. Costumes here are based on historical references, but there is an almost comic-book look to the depiction of the humans¾a smooth oversimplification of the anatomy, an exaggeration of the whites of the eyes and so forth. Nevertheless, the intense colors and use of black outlines create a dramatic setting for the legend. No information is given as to the sources. "Legends of the Americas" series. 2002, Peter Bedrick Books/McGraw-Hill Children's Publishing, $18.95. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz
