I couldn't put this one down (and that's not normal for me)... this book easily matches the quality of most traditionally published thrillers. ... Character development is rich, with several town residents who leap out of the page. ...And I have to say that in terms of character, the scene with the morphine injection rocked; if you read this book you'll know what I mean.

Meet the Author

Toni Dwiggins is a third-generation Californian who migrated from southern Cal to northern Cal. What she likes most about her state is that one can go from the ocean to the mountains in one day, with a lunch stop in the desert. She likes it so much she has chosen those settings for her forensic geology books. These stories feature a young woman and her father-figure mentor, who analyze earth evidence to solve crimes and crises--and in the process get entangled in outdoor adventure and thrills.

Enjoyed this book very much. Well thought-out characters and plots. Fast-moving and believable action. This was a "could not put it down" book for me because of the subject matter (volcanic eruption). Highly recommended.

As a geologist who is also somewhat familiar with the area around Mammoth Lake and Bishop, CA, I had high hopes for this novel. But it just did not make the cut. My biggest complaints were lack of character development and implausible events. An international Biathlon tournament was interrupted for a volcano drill. A man was shot, albeit not fatally, and we never come back to the Biathlon! Athletes who traveled thousands of miles to compete would certainly not accept such poor management and an abrupt cancellation of competition. The science is fairly sound, however, the biggest point in favor of this book. But it is sometimes overshadowed by the baggage all the characters carry on their backs. It was just too much angst and caused characters to make foolish choices that had tragic consequences for their lives. I can only recommend this to hardened field geologists and only if they truly want to read some fiction about the Mammoth Lakes area. It is easy to skip over lots of silliness, making this a fast read.

Great read, excellent character development ,it felt like I knew the characters personally. Would love to see the movie, suspenseful, a lot of action, needed a little more romance for Cassie's character to make her more more appealing and less stoic.
