Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Five chapters of clearly written text about the science and history of volcanoes, liberally illustrated by dramatic photographs, make this a superior choice for curious kids, young researchers and classroom supplemental reading. The narrative reads more like a story than a lecture, with challenging vocabulary explained in context. Of course, the favorite sections will be about the sensational eruptions of yesteryear, like Vesuvius, Tambora, Pinatubo and Mount Saint Helens. Bonus information near the index includes Internet sites, useful addresses and suggested titles for additional reading. The book is part of a four-part series called "Natural Disasters." 2001, Capstone Books, $21.26. Ages 8 to 11. Reviewer: Deborah Zink Roffino

"Volcanoes" is a great book for kids of the ages 10-15. This book explains the eruptions of volcanoes and how they happen. It also talks about the damage that the volcanoes can cause to the society around them. And it mentions the three different types of volcanoes: Cinder cone volcanoes, Composite Volcanoes, and shield volcanoes. It also talks about the theory of the continental drift.
Some of the topics that the book cover are: How and where volcanoes form, the different types of volcanoes, the giant awakens, destruction, and when and where the next eruption will occur. And it describes the different types of eruptions. Its gives a brief description of the hot spot theory. And on page 25, it gives a detailed diagram. It also touches a little a bit on subduction zones. There is also a diagram of subduction zones on page 23.
Each chapter has a vivid display of pictures, illustrations, and diagrams to help the reader understand more about volcanoes. Some diagrams are used to show the different types of volcanoes and what they look like or consist of on the inside layers. Others are used to demonstrate how the theories came to be, and helps describe them.
Many popular eruptions mentioned in this book are Armeo, Mt. Rainer, Lahar, Mammoth Mountain, Pinatubo, Tambora and Mount Saint Helens. It gives detailed description of each one of these volcanoes in different scenarios or situations.
There are many helpful sections in the back of the book. It provides an index. A glossary can also be found in the back of the book that provides definition. It also provides a works cited page and picture credits. There are also suggestions for other books on volcanoes on the "For Further Reading".
I recommend this book to readers who are trying to learn the basics of volcanoes and how they work. It is an easy read, but very informative at the same time.
