Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Ashcliffe and Thad Ashcliffe
This book is well written, information dense and enthralling for the student reader. The layout is clean and focused. There are excellent graphs and charts throughout the book. The use of computer graphics for illustrations in this book works well for some things and for other things, it gets in the way. Strong uses of computer- generated illustrations show three-dimensional concepts, lists and/or sequences of things. The computer-generated graphics excel at showing concepts as with the superb overview of plate tectonics and the structure of the Earth. For the most part where a few actual photographs are used, the pictures are, although excellent in quality and right on topic, small. Showing people via actual photographs is much more effective than a computer-generated graphic, e.g., there are excellent "after" pictures of San Francisco and Kobe. Occasionally, the computer graphics get in the way as with the illustration of geysers. The information content, however, more than makes up for this slight defect. This book, in addition to interesting the young reader, can serve as an adjunct text for the science teacher. Reviewer: Mary Ashcliffe and Thad Ashcliffe
