Overview

What excitement—stepping right up to the edge of an active volcano! Children will feel as if that’s exactly what they’re doing when they open this fabulous kit. The beautifully illustrated book is filled with information on how volcanoes are created, where they are located (including some at the bottom of the ocean), and how they affect life on Earth. Magma, lava, tectonic plates: there are plenty of facts, new vocabulary, and an introduction to some of the most famous volcanoes ever. Plus, kids get to place stickers of volcanoes on a map, and put together their very own flip book of a volcano erupting!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Beginning with a brief breakdown of the creation of a life sustaining environment on earth, the author succinctly moves on to describe the evolution of a volcano, locations of volcanoes all over the earth, different types of volcanoes, what happens when they erupt, and the benefits they provide. Briefly mentioned also is a bit of mythology and history. Judging by the illustrations, this book would appear to be for very young readers in the four to seven age range, but the text itself is geared more towards seven to nine year olds. Some of the information presented may be a bit much for the target audience to comprehend, but if this book were used with an adult or older child, perhaps as part of unit study, and taken slowly to cover each section to the point of understanding, it would be a great reference for young volcanologists. There is no question that it is a great starting point for many discussions, experiments, and further research. Also included are stickers, a map, and a ready-to-be made flip book depicting a volcanic eruption. This is part of the My Favorite Nature Book series. Reviewer: Trina Heidt
